Tom Rathman Biography and Career:
Born on October 7, 1962, Thomas Dean “Tom” Rathman is a former fullback in American football. He played with the San Francisco 49ers (1986–1993) and the Oakland Raiders (1994). Rathman’s birthday is October 7. He coaches the team’s running backs in his current role with the 49ers. Rathman stood out in three sports at Grand Island Senior High in the middle of Nebraska.
In addition to his career as a fullback for the Islanders football team, which earned him a spot in the state Hall of Fame, Rathman also won the state title in the high jump during his junior year. Rathman participated in football at the University of Nebraska for three years and earned three letters. Nearly the course of his collegiate career, he rushed for 1,425 yards, good for an average of almost six yards per carry.
Rathman established multiple school position marks, some still in place today. These records include the most yards running by a fullback in a single season (881, in 1985) and the most career rushing touchdowns by a fullback (12). Rathman is sometimes regarded as the finest fullback in the modern period of Nebraska’s history. Particularly during his senior season in 1985, when he averaged 7.5 yards per carry, he became known for his ability to break off lengthy runs, which led to his notoriety.
As a fullback, Rathman competed professionally for nine years, the first eight of which were spent with the San Francisco 49ers. During his time in San Francisco, he played on the same squad as Roger Craig, another alumnus of the University of Nebraska, for whom he blocked. In Super Bowl XXIV, Rathman contributed to the 49ers’ success by running for 38 yards, collecting four catches for 43 yards, and scoring two touchdowns. He also helped the 49ers win both of their Super Bowl titles.
In 1989, he had 73 catches for 616 yards, which put him in first place among all NFL running backs in receiving. The Oakland Raiders were his team for the last season of his career. At the end of his National Football League (NFL) career, Rathman had 2,020 yards running, 320 catches for 2,684 yards, five kickoff returns for 103 yards, and 34 touchdowns. After his career as a player ended, Rathman joined the coaching staff of the 49ers in 1997 and held the position of running backs coach until 2002.
In 2003, he joined head coach Steve Mariucci at the Detroit Lions, where Rathman served as the running backs coach during Mariucci’s time with the Lions. During that time, Mariucci was with the Lions. Until 2009, when his contract with the Oakland Raiders ended, he continued to work in the same capacity. On January 7, 2009, he returned to the 49ers in the power of running backs coach.
Rathman, his wife, and their three kids, Nicole, Ali, and Samantha, live together in their home in Redwood Shores, California. Rathman was a National Football League (NFL) veteran, having played in the league for 31 seasons. He was a member of the 49ers organization for 22 years, both as a player and a coach. Rathman, now enshrined in the organization’s Hall of Fame, was a member of the San Francisco 49ers for eight seasons.
He finished his career with 4,392 total yards, scoring 34 touchdowns, and being a member of two teams that won the Super Bowl. The current running backs coach, Bobby Turner, was one of the first people that Head Coach Kyle Shanahan hired after taking over in 2017. Rathman was allowed to take on another position on the coaching staff but declined to accept a job with the Colts as their running backs coach.
Tom Rathman, the legendary fullback and running backs coach for the 49ers, announced his retirement on Thursday. A 49ers Hall of Fame member as both a player and a coach, Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. spent 31 years in the National Football League. After graduating from Nebraska, the 49ers selected Rathman in the third round of the 1986 NFL Draft. This marked the beginning of Rathman’s playing career.
Before concluding his career with one season in Oakland, he played in San Francisco for the first eight seasons. During that time, he was an essential member of two teams that won the Super Bowl. Additionally, Rathman’s beginnings as a coach may be traced back to this city in San Francisco. In 1997, he became a member of the coaching staff of the 49ers and was given the role of running backs coach, which he remained in until the 2002 season.
After that, he played for the Detroit Lions for three seasons, the Oakland Raiders for three seasons, and the San Francisco 49ers for the last eight years of his career; in 2017, when Kyle Shanahan took over as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, he left the team for the second time. Before becoming a member of the Colts coaching staff and serving in that capacity for the last three seasons of his career, Rathman rested throughout the 2017 season.
On Tuesday, about two months after Rathman and the team mutually agreed to split ways, CEO Jed York broke the news to followers of his Twitter account. On Friday, at the NFL draft in Philadelphia, Rathman will also announce the 49ers’ second-round choice.
An outstanding article written by Kevin Clark for the Ringer provided insight into his hard work ethic. However, one tale from Gore’s time with the 49ers immediately emerged. It was Tom Rathman’s account of the first time he met with Frank Gore in 2009 while working as the running backs coach for the 49ers.
