Verena Altenberger Biography and Career:

Verena Altenberger spent part of her childhood in Schloss Winkl, a former seat of nobility when her mother was the head of the Winklhof agricultural school. Verena Altenberger grew up in the Austrian state of Salzburg in the towns of Dorfgastein, Hallein, and Oberalmand. Verena Altenberger was born in Salzburg. At 18, Altenberger moved to Vienna to pursue a career in acting. While there, he tried out for a spot in the Max Reinhardt Seminar but was ultimately rejected.

She enrolled in the University of Vienna to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Mass Media and Communication Science, which she was ultimately able to do. She began her studies in theater at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna in September 2011 and graduated with honors in June 2015 after completing her program. The film debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2017 after being honored with the Compass Perspective Award. Verena Altenberger’s voice may be heard in the role of narrator in the 2017 documentary Climb Every Mountain: Sound of Music Revisited (“The Makemakes in Hollywood – Auf den Spuren von The Sound of Music”). She was cast as Rosa Unterguggenberger in the ORF/BR/ARTE drama Das Wunder von Worgl, which began production in the autumn of 2017, and she worked on the show with Austrian actor and film director Karl Markovics.

Swiss filmmaker Urs Egger was responsible for directing. She worked with Director David Schalko on the production of “M – A City Hunts a Murderer” (German: “M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Morder”) at the beginning of 2018, and in April of the same year, she filmed for the historical drama “Ein Dorf wehrt sich – Das Geheimnis von Altaussee,” which was a co-production between ZDF, ORF, and Arte.

Altenberger portrayed the role of Interpol investigator Carla Orlando in the 2019 Arte television drama Hunt for the Bosses (also known as “Die Spur der Morder”), which also starred Heino Ferch in the role of head investigator Ingo Thiel. She portrayed Anne, a non-Jewish bookstore highly enthusiastic about Judaism, in the ORF/BR comedy Schones Schlamassel by Wolfgang Murnberger, which she shot in late 2019 opposite Maxim Mehmet. In February 2019, Altenberger appeared as a guest on the program “Fruhstuck bei mir” by Claudia Stockl on the Austrian radio station O3. On the satirical late-night chat program known as “Wir sind Kaiser” in December 2019, Altenberger appeared as a guest. Verena Altenberger and Adrian Goiginger worked together again in 2020 on the production of Marzengrund, adapted from the play of the same name written by Felix Mitterer. Concurrently, she was in South Tyrol working on producing the series Wild Republic for MagentaTV.

In 2021, Altenberger shaved her head in preparation for her role as a cancer patient in the first film directed by Chris Raiber, titled Unter der Haut der Stadt. She played the part of Marie in the tragicomedy “Me, We,” which had its world debut at the Graz Diagonale in June of 2021. In the play, Marie goes to Lesbos to offer early medical treatment for refugees who arrive at an NGO camp on the shore.
