He is most well-known for his work on the manga series “Dragon Ball,” which is widely considered to be among the most successful and well-read series of its kind anywhere in the world.
As a renowned character designer for video games, he is most recognized for his work on the ‘Dragon Quest series and ‘Blue Dragon,’ amongst other titles. He was born and raised in Japan, and throughout his school years, he acquired a passion for the art form known as manga. He left his job in advertising after a few years to pursue a career as a manga artist after working there for a while.
Following the publication of his first few mangas, he achieved significant prominence when his comedic series ‘Dr. Slump’ won widespread acclaim. After this, he went on to achieve an even larger level of popularity with the series Dragon Ball.’ It is estimated that millions of copies of his manga have been sold all over the globe, and both of his comics have been turned into anime. He went on to write shorter comics and one-shots later on. As a result of his outstanding artistic contributions, he was honored with several honors. He is the father of a boy and a daughter with his wife, Yoshimi Kato, whom he married.
Toriyama was born in Nagoya, which is located in the prefecture of Aichi, Japan, on April 5th, 1955. His grandfather had an auto repair shop and was an avid motorcyclist in his spare time. Toriyama’s passion for automobiles and motorcycles is something he got from his father.
Because there were no entertainment options available during his school days, all of his buddies from elementary school attempted to create anime and manga. Even he got in on the craze, and his submission of “101 Dalmatians” ended up earning him first place in the neighborhood art studio. Because of this, he began to take an interest in this job.
In the year 1974, he enrolled in high school with the intention of studying art, particularly publicity. However, in 1977 he quit his job to pursue a course in “cartoon drawing.” After that, he started working as a poster designer for a firm in Nagoya that was in the advertising business. He spent three years in the workforce before deciding to pursue a career as a manga artist.
He competed in the “Jump” magazine amateur manga competition with his work. Even though he didn’t end up winning, his work was seen and admired by Kazuhiko Torishima, who would go on to serve as the editor of Toriyama’s comics in the future.
Toriyama entered the world of manga in 1978 with the publication of his short tale titled “Wonder Island” in the manga magazine known as “Weekly Shonen Jump.” In 1979, he produced his second manga, which was titled ‘Highlight Island.’
It was his role as Dr. Slump in the 1980s comedy series that gained him a lot of acclaim and popularity. The manga was serialized in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump’ between the years 1980 and 1984. The narrative recounts the adventures of a professor and the robot he built, which they call “Arale.” In 1981, the “Shogakukan Comic Award” was bestowed on him as a result of this manga.
More than 35 million copies of ‘Dr. Slumps’ have been sold throughout Japan. It was then turned into an anime series that was a huge hit when it was shown on television between the years 1981 and 1986. The remade version of the program was shown from 1997 to 1999.
The ‘Dragon Ball manga series by Toriyama was first released in 1984 in the ‘Weekly Shonen Jump,’ where it quickly rose to the top of the charts in terms of both popularity and renown. It is said to be the “most influential Shonen manga” due to the fact that its sales have surpassed 156 million copies in Japan alone. It increased the magazine’s circulation to 6.53 million in 1995 as a direct result of this.
First published as an action-adventure manga, “Dragon Ball” transitioned over time to become a story focused on martial arts. It was successful for its whole run, which lasted from 1984 through 1995. Toriyama contributed a total of 519 chapters to the manga, which was later collected into a total of 42 volumes.
This manga series has been converted into five anime, multiple animated movies, and a number of different video games due to its enormous popularity. Two of these five anime were not based on the manga, although Toriyama himself had developed the characters for those two shows.
The anime series ‘Dragon Ball’ won over audiences not just in Japan but also in Europe and North America. Around the world, 240 million copies of manga were purchased and read. In the year 1986, video game designer and creator Yuji Horii approached Toriyama about designing characters and creating artwork for his project titled “Dragon Quest.” This game was instrumental in introducing computerized RPGs (Role Playing Games) to the mainstream market in Japan.
Toriyama is responsible for the character designs of a large number of other video games, including “Dragon Warrior,” “Super Famicom,” “Chrono Trigger,” and the “Tobal” series. However, in the world of video games, his most notable work is the creation of characters for the well-known role-playing game (RPG) series ‘Dragon Quest.’
After completing the ‘Dragon Ball series, Toriyama went on to produce a number of shorter manga works, such as ‘Sand Land,’ ‘Cowa!,’ and ‘Kajika.’
The first issue of “Shonen Jump,” the North American edition of “Weekly Shonen Jump,” was published in December 2002 in the city of New York. The American journal included not only Toriyama’s stories “Dragon Bull” and “Sand Land,” but also an interview with the author. Toriyama conceived and designed the one-person electric car known as the QVOLT, which was marketed by ‘CQ Motors’ in March 2005. It took him a full year to design this automobile.
In 2006, he worked with Eiichiro Oda, who is best known for the manga series ‘One Piece,’ to create the one-shot comic ‘Cross-Epoch.’ A one-shot is a comic that is published as a standalone issue rather than as part of an ongoing series. This is a “crossover,” which means that it features characters from both “Dragon Ball” and “One Piece.” In 2008, Toriyama and his friend Masakazu Katsura collaborated to create the Jump SQ one-shot titled “Sachie-Chan Good!!,”.
Children were given an education about the significance of nature and farming thanks to this manga. He produced a video for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami victims in collaboration with “Shonen Jump,” with the goal of gaining support for those affected by the disaster.
Toriyama was responsible for the animation and screenwriting of the first film in the Dragon Ball Z film series, which was titled “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods” and was released on March 30, 2013. Additionally, he worked on the sequel to it, titled “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F,” which was published on April 18th, 2015.
In order to commemorate the publication of the first issue of “Weekly Shonen Jump” on July 1, 1973, he debuted a new series in July 2013 titled “Jaco, the Galactic Patrolman.” Beginning in 2015, he began contributing to the ‘Dragon Ball Super anime and manga.
Toriyama claims that Jackie Chan’s film ‘Drunken Master’ was the inspiration behind his manga ‘Dragon Ball,’ and that Osamu Tezuka, a Japanese cartoonist, and Walt Disney’s ‘101 Dalmatians’ are both sources of creative motivation for him. The name of his workplace, “Bird Studio,” comes from the fact that his given name, “Tori,” literally translates to “bird” in Japanese. He does all of the creative work by himself, although on occasion he will ask an assistant to help him with the backgrounds.
