He spent three years in the workforce before deciding to pursue a career as a manga artist.

He competed in the “Jump” magazine amateur manga competition with his work. Even though he didn’t end up winning, his work was seen and admired by Kazuhiko Torishima, who would go on to serve as the editor of Toriyama’s comics in the future.

Toriyama entered the world of manga in 1978 with the publication of his short tale titled “Wonder Island” in the manga magazine known as “Weekly Shonen Jump.” In 1979, he produced his second manga, which was titled ‘Highlight Island.’

It was his role as Dr. Slump in the 1980s comedy series that gained him a lot of acclaim and popularity. The manga was serialized in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump’ between the years 1980 and 1984. Toriyama claims that Jackie Chan’s film ‘Drunken Master’ was the inspiration behind his manga ‘Dragon Ball,’ and that Osamu Tezuka, a Japanese cartoonist, and Walt Disney’s ‘101 Dalmatians’ are both sources of creative motivation for him.
