Alistair Burt Biography and Career:
He was born in Bury, Lancashire, and went to school at the Bury Grammar School, where he was named Head Boy in 1973. In 1977, he graduated from St. John’s College, Oxford, where he learned about law. Burt was a student at Oxford when he went to the 1975 A Question of Europe debate on TV. He wore a beret, striped shirt, and string of onions. Because of his work, he was made president of the Oxford Law Society in 1976. After being hired by Slater Heelis & Co. of Manchester as an assistant in 1978, he became a lawyer at Watts Vallance and Vallance in 1980.
He worked there until 1983. On Haringey Borough Council, Burt served as a councilor for two years in 1982 and 1984, but he left the council in 1984. At the 1983 general election, he ran for the new seat of Bury North. He won with a majority of 2,792 votes. He was the MP for the seat until 1997. In 2001, he ran for the seat again. Burt became the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) for the Secretary of State for Environment, Kenneth Baker, in 1985. He stayed that way when Baker became the Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1986, and when he became the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1989 to 1990.
He stayed there until 1995 when he was promoted even more and became Minister of State at the same department, where he stayed until 1997. Many ministers lost their seats in the 1997 general election. Bury North was won by Labour’s David Chaytor with 7,866 votes, and he was one of them. From 1997 to 2001, he worked at Whitehead Mann GKR, a company that helps people find jobs. At the 2001 general election, Alistair Burt ran for the safe Conservative seat of Bedfordshire North East, which had been held by the former Attorney General Nicholas Lyell, who had stepped down. In 2001, he was an opposition spokesman on Education and Skills for William Hague.
In 2002, he was the PPS for the Leader of the Opposition, Iain Duncan Smith. Burt stayed on as Michael Howard’s PPS the next year. As a Conservative health minister, he blocked a new law that would have made it easier for the NHS to get cheap and effective drugs. Instead, he pushed for medicines whose patents had run out. Burt spoke for almost 30 minutes in Parliament to try to stop the Off-Patent Drugs Bill, a plan that had support from backbenchers from all the different party groups. He said, “It’s not always the case that something that comes from a charity and is backed by a lot of people is always the answer.” It’s not bad because it’s the right answer.
The Bill was then changed and made into law after everyone agreed on the issue. As the Minister of State for Community and Social Care, he said on July 17, 2015, that the cap on care costs would not start until April 2020. There was a law passed by the coalition government that included a cap on how much money people could spend on health care, and that law was implemented from 2016 onward.
During the general election in 2015, all the main political parties agreed to that law. Since 2005, the North East Bedfordshire Constituency Association has received £34,911.93 in donations from people who care about the area. People who work for conservative groups have made donations to Burt. The largest was £32,071.93 from The Association of Conservative Clubs Ltd. in 2005. Over-claiming for rent by £1,000 was found out by Burt in 2009. He didn’t have to pay back the money because he didn’t claim expenses for food, so he didn’t have to.
