Ann Curry Biography and Career:
Ann Curry (born November 19, 1956) is an American journalist and photographer who has covered human suffering in conflict zones and natural calamities for more than 30 years. Curry has covered battles in Kosovo, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Afghanistan, Darfur, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Central African Republic. Curry has covered various catastrophes, including the Southeast Asian tsunamis and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, when her Twitter plea was credited with speeding the arrival of aid flights.
In June 2012, she was named NBC News’ national and international correspondent-anchor, as well as the Today show’s anchor at large. From June 9, 2011, until June 28, 2012, she served as co-host of Today and as the program’s news anchor from March 1997 until she became co-anchor. From 2005 until 2011, she was also the host of Dateline NBC.
Curry is the daughter of Hiroe Nagase and Robert Paul “Bob” Curry. She was born in Agana, Guam. Her mother is of Japanese descent. Her father, a native of Pueblo, Colorado, was descended from Irish and German ancestors. Her parents met during the United States occupation of Japan during World War II, when her father, a career naval veteran, worked as a streetcar conductor. Despite his removal from Japan, he returned two years later to marry Nagase. Curry is the oldest child of five.
Curry spent many years as a kid in Japan, where he attended the Ernest J. King School on the US Fleet Activities Sasebo naval post in Sasebo, Nagasaki. Later in life, she relocated to Ashland, Oregon, where she attended Ashland High School and graduated. In 1978, she earned a bachelor of arts in journalism from the University of Oregon.
Curry announced his departure from NBC News on January 13, 2015, after almost 25 years. Curry started her own multi-platform media company in January 2015. She continues to perform high-profile news interviews on network television, most notably gaining an exclusive interview with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on the Iran nuclear negotiations.
1978–1989 Curry started her broadcasting career in 1978 as an intern at KTVL in Medford, Oregon, which was then affiliated with NBC (and is now affiliated with CBS). She grew to become the station’s first female news reporter during her tenure there. Curry joined NBC station KGW in Portland in 1980, where she worked as a reporter and anchor. Curry relocated to Los Angeles four years later as a reporter for KCBS-TV, where he earned two Emmy Awards between 1984 and 1990.
1990–2012 Curry joined NBC News in 1990, initially as a reporter for NBC News in Chicago and later as the host of NBC News at Sunrise from 1991 until 1996. Curry also filled in for Matt Lauer as a news anchor at Today from 1994 until 1997. She served as Today’s news anchor from 1997 to 2011, becoming the show’s second-longest serving news anchor, following Frank Blair, who held the position from 1953 to 1975. She also served as a replacement anchor for Today during this same period. Curry was chosen co-host of Dateline NBC alongside Stone Phillips on June 24, 2005; she stayed as the lead anchor upon Phillips’ departure on July 2, 2007, until she succeeded Meredith Vieira as Today’s anchor in 2011. From 2005 through 2011, she served as the principal replacement on NBC Nightly News.
Curry has covered important international topics from Baghdad to Sri Lanka, the Congo, Rwanda, Albania, and Darfur. Curry anchored NBC’s primetime coverage and highlights of the Live Earth concerts on July 7, 2007, and also provided interviews with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Vice President Al Gore for the program. Curry reported aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt during November 2001’s Afghan invasion and had an exclusive interview with General Tommy Franks. In early 2003, she reported from Baghdad, and later from the USS Constellation when the Iraq war started. Curry was also the first network news anchor to cover the late 2004 Southeast Asian tsunami.
Curry bungee-jumped from the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough, England, on December 17, 2007, to raise money for charity. Her leap was shown live on NBC’s Today program.
Curry flew to Iran in 2009 and conducted an interview with then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, just days before Ahmadinejad came to America to address the United Nations, General Assembly.
Curry made his public service debut in 2011 in the PBS Kids Sprout “Kindness Counts” public service program.
