Arizona Cardinals Biography and Career:
The Arizona Cardinals are a professional gridiron football team located in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. Because they are the league’s most established club (having been in the league since 1898), the Arizona Cardinals are both one of its most unsuccessful (having won just two NFL titles, both in 1925 and 1947) and one of its most storied (having won two Super Bowls, both in 1947).
A neighborhood team located on Chicago’s South Side known as the Morgan Athletic Club gave birth to the Chicago Cardinals in 1903. After receiving a shipment of worn jerseys from the University of Chicago Maroons football team that was cardinal red in color, the club’s founder, Chris O’Brien, gave them the moniker “The Cardinals” in 1901. It was known as the Racine Cardinals at the time since it was named after a street in Chicago where the team’s playing field was situated.
The squad competed in a loosely structured “league” made up of amateur teams from the Chicago region. After years of consistent success and popularity, the Cardinals were granted the chance to join the American Professional Football League (the precursor of the National Football League) when it was created in 1920. It was in 1922 when a franchise from Racine, Wisconsin, entered the NFL, and the club was afterward renamed the Chicago Cardinals. After achieving a record of 11 wins, two defeats, and one tie over the course of the 1925 season, the Cardinals were awarded their first National Football League title three years later.
After 1925, the squad went through a lengthy period of noncompetitive and sometimes terrible years, which included two seasons with a record of 0–10 in 1943 and 1944. Jimmy Conzelman, who had previously coached the Cardinals from 1940 to 1942, was rehired by the club in 1946, and he supervised the team’s triumph in the 1947 NFL championship game, which was fueled by the performance of the team’s fabled “Million-Dollar Backfield.”
Following this accomplishment, the Cardinals went on to post a franchise-best 11–1 record and another trip to the Super Bowl in 1948, when they were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles, 7–0. Conzelman was fired by the Cardinals the following season, and the club went through another lengthy spell of bad performance. Because of this, the club was forced to transfer to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1960. The team was generally referred to as St. Louis “football” Cardinals, in tribute to the city’s renowned Major League Baseball team of the same name, which was founded in 1903.
When they moved to St. Louis, the Cardinals began to post winning records more frequently. However, the postseason eluded them until 1974, when a team that included quarterback Jim Hart, running back Terry Metcalf, and a pair of future Hall of Famers, offensive lineman Dan Dierdorf and tight end Jackie Smith, won 10 players and played the first of two consecutive trips to the playoffs, where they were defeated both times. While the Cardinals returned to the postseason during the strike-shortened 1982 season, the club was forced to relocate to Phoenix in 1988 due to a lack of overall fan support, paired with the desire of the team’s ownership to build a financially successful home stadium.
It was not until 1998 that the Cardinals’ dismal performance came to an end, as quarterback Jake Plummer guided the club to a nine-win season and its first postseason triumph in 51 years. The team’s enthusiasm did not carry over into the next season, and they were forced to endure yet another lengthy playoff wait. The Cardinals had their most successful season since relocating to Arizona in 2008, led by veteran quarterback Kurt Warner and a potent offense that included Pro Bowl wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.
The team went on to win the NFC West and make their first Super Bowl appearance the following February, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final seconds. After guiding the Cardinals to another participation in the postseason in 2009, Warner and Boldin both departed the club at the conclusion of the season, and the Cardinals promptly reverted to their previous losing ways.

Despite winning 10 games for the second time in club history since moving to Arizona, the Cardinals failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2013. After winning 11 games in 2014 to secure a playoff position, the Cardinals suffered a disappointing loss in their first playoff game in 2015, despite fielding a third-string quarterback at that point.
During the next season, Arizona won 13 games, which was the most in the team’s 96-year history. They also won the division championship. Despite a last-second hail-mary touchdown from the Green Bay Packers, the Arizona Cardinals rallied to win the game only three plays into overtime in their first-round playoff matchup against the Green Bay Packers in a spectacular manner.
The Cardinals were subsequently ousted from the playoffs by the Carolina Panthers in the NFC title game. In 2016, the Cardinals limped to a 7–8–1 record, as they were unable to break their franchise-record run of consecutive postseason appearances, which stood at two years and eight games. Throughout the following seasons, Arizona’s performance deteriorated, reaching a low point in 2018 when the club compiled an NFL-worst 3–13 record.
