Arthur Gunn Biography and Career:

Arthur Gunn (born October 24, 1997) is an American singer-songwriter of Nepalese descent from Wichita, Kansas. He first gained widespread recognition in 2020 as the runner-up finalist on the eighteenth season of the singing competition series American Idol (AI).

His “textured, sandpapery” vocals have made him popular since he began singing in 2014. Early in 2018, Grahan, his eight-song first album, was released.  In 2019, he released another album called KHOJ, which had hits like “Khoj, Ma, and Karnali (The River).

Dibesh Pokharel (Dibesh means light) was born on October 24, 1997, in Kathmandu, the nation of Nepal’s main city and home to about 2.5 million people. His parents are Datram and Maiya. His family, which consisted of four sisters, including Rubi, Rupa, and Supriya, was not musical, despite the fact that he was exposed to it at a young age and grew up around it; they observed that as a young boy, he sung and played toy guitars that his mother gave him.

He wanted to listen to music and records as his family did. He began combining songs while playing the guitar when he was just two years old.  Growing up, he first encountered American Idol through online viewing of the American version.

He also studied English in Nepal. “My mother gave me my first guitar, after which I began to sing along to any song I heard on the radio or television. The dream of performing began at that time.”  When he was eleven years old, his family moved to Wichita, Kansas; nonetheless, he stayed and completed his education.

Later on, he would perform in pubs and coffee shops, but mostly for friend gatherings; he ultimately recorded several songs. He began to take singing seriously in 2012 or 2013. After completing high school, he followed his sisters who were attending college in the United States and moved to Wichita, Kansas.

His parents later joined him there, and it was then that he first heard bluegrass and country music. He acquired a new guitar, made friends with other musicians, and performed in the city’s coffeehouses. He travelled and busked on street corners in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, as well as during a summer at the boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland.

He names a number of musicians as influences and sources of inspiration, including John Martyn, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Bukka White, Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Page, Joe Cocker, Mississippi John Hurt, John Lee Hooker, Ray LaMontagne, and Ben Howard.

Gunn knew he wanted to be a professional singer-songwriter and, after being encouraged to audition by his musical friends, believed it was a good chance to learn more about the business. Gunn started utilising his stage name in 2018 and began recording songs at about the same time.

he prominent French poet from the 1800s, Arthur Rimbaud, was one of the authors he was reading “I felt his name Arthur would make a fantastic stage name because his writings were so cutting edge. Although Arthur is an easier stage name to utilise, many people only know me as Dibesh.”

I am fascinated with art in all of its forms and the possibilities it offers, he said of the name, which was chosen somewhat at random but begins with the word “art.” Additionally, he said, “The name Hur is from the Bible and means “Hole,” but it has no religious connotations.

Gunn, meanwhile, stands for conflict “. When he first began to take singing seriously in 2013, he worked on sculpting his voice and then had mentors teach him breathing exercises before strengthening his talents. In addition to Prakriti Deuja, the first Nepalese American to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a National Basketball Association game in 2014, Nisha Rasaily, and Passang Doma Lama, Gunn is one of the most recent talented vocalists from the Nepal region, according to The Voice of Sikkim.

Early in 2018, Grahan, an eight-song album in Nepali that included the love song “Nyano Ghar” was released., Grahan is a word that means “regarding day and night, the sun and moon.”  According to Heavy, “his Nepali songs have blended the sounds of musicians like Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, and Bukka White.”

He performed a tour throughout Nepal to promote the album and recorded new songs in 2019, including “Ma,” “Khoj,” and “Karnali (The River),” all of which will appear on a new album.  By April 2020, there were 230,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, up from just under 70,000 in February.

Gunn filed an online audition for American Idol (AI) in 2019, and on September 4 he was accepted to the live auditions in Wichita for the third season of the rebooted version—the show’s overall eighteenth season. It was one of the 22 places the producers visited during a four-month “Bus Tour,” and it was AI’s first trip to the city since the show’s inception in 2002.

He sang “Eddy’s Song” (2011) by Sticky Fingers, which had received over eight million views as of May 2020.  Gunn names Laine Hardy, the 2019 champion, and Alejandro Aranda, the 2019 runner-up, as two of his favourite AI graduates.

Luke Bryan said, “I think he might be the biggest star we’ve ever had on ‘American Idol,'” after seeing a piece of Gunn’s audition with the judges in a sneak preview for the episode from December 2019. Gunn is also one of a large number of contestants who appear in a February 2020 AI commercial that was inspired by a scene from Almost Famous (2000)

And stars AI host Ryan Seacrest driving a bus full of contestants who are singing along to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” while watching the Academy Awards. The commercial debuted during the Oscars and has since received “heavy rotation.

The candidates were virtually famous, Seacrest says at the scene’s conclusion in. Gunn had been unsure about AI despite knowing he wanted to be a professional musician; as a result, he has grown to be “amazed” by the experience “The performing arts, being an artist, and the music business have all taught me a lot.

On December 2–5, 2019, 167 competitors competed in Hollywood Week, which was taped at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, California. [Gunn chose the singer-songwriter musical style for the first round, and the judges had to prod him to continue performing “Hard to Handle” by Otis Redding (1968)’s second stanza.

Amber Fiedler, who was later ousted from the Hawaiian Showcase, was his partner for the duet round.  For the Solo round, he sang “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” by Creedence Clearwater Revival from 1971 again, but with his own arrangement.

In Kapolei, Hawaii at the Aulani resort, Gunn proceeded to the Top Forty and the Showcase round after playing live in front of an audience that included his parents and sisters.  His sisters expressed their happiness, especially considering that Arthur had never received professional instruction prior to the event.

The Top Twenty are chosen during the two-episode Showcase/Final Judgement phase, which was shot in January 2020. On the second night, Gunn was seen singing Bob Marley & the Wailers’ “Is This Love?” (1978). The choice to move him to the Top Twenty, according to Judge Lionel Richie, was one of the simplest ones they had to make.

After Rickey Smith, who ended in eighth place in 2003 on the second season, and Phil Stacey, who finished sixth in 2007 on the sixth season, Gunn is the third Top Twenty candidate from the Wichita region since the show’s inception.
