Boise State Broncos football Biography and Career:

The Boise State Broncos football programme represents Boise State University in college football. As a member of the Mountain West Conference, the Broncos compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Broncos are a college football team based in Boise, Idaho, that plays its home games at Albertsons Stadium under the leadership of Andy Avalos. After a 12–7 record in bowl games since 1999, including a perfect 3–0 mark in the Fiesta Bowl, the programme has achieved a new high in 2018. As of the conclusion of the 2019 season, the Broncos’ all-time winning percentage of.732 was the best in all of collegiate football.

Dusty Kline was the first football coach at what was then a junior college, and Boise State’s first football team was fielded in 1933 under his guidance. Their record stood at 1–2–1 during that time period (.375). Max Eiden took over as Kline’s successor. In his three seasons as head coach, the Broncos compiled an 11–17–1 (.397) mark.

Upon Eiden’s retirement, Harry Jacoby took over as head coach for the team until the middle of the 1941 season, when he was called into military service. Coach George “Stub” Allison guided the team for the remainder of the 1941 season, compiling a 2-1 record (.667). From 1942 to 1945, the Broncos did not participate in intramural football due to a decrease in the number of male students on campus as a result of the war effort. The Broncos would have one more season under Jacoby after the war ended in 1946, with a final record of 14-15-2 under his direction (.484).

Lyle Smith was promoted to head football coach of Boise Junior College in 1947 after a year as an assistant coach with the programme. When Smith became head coach, he had tremendous success, winning his first 31 games in a row as the head coach of the Washington Wizards. Upon completion of the 10,000-seat stadium in 1950, the team relocated to its current location. Due to the onset of the Korean War in 1950, Smith, who was still unbeaten as a head coach, was recalled to the Navy and only able to coach in the first three games of the ensuing regular season. Smith was absent for the remainder of 1950 and the entire 1951 season, during which George Blankley served as head coach, compiling a 16-2 (.889) record during Smith’s absence from the team.

The following year, Smith was rehired as head coach, and his winning streak grew to 37 games before he was defeated for the first time. As a leading candidate for the vacant position at his alma mater Idaho in 1954, Smith withdrew his name from consideration because he was happy in his current position in Boise, Idaho. Football at Boise State was successful under Smith, with the Broncos winning thirteen conference titles and the NJCAA National Football Championship in 1958. On the final day, Smith finished with a record of 150–25–6 (.845). When it came to being the head coach, Coach Smith never had a losing season.

After two seasons as an NAIA independent, Boise State’s football programme was elevated to four-year status in 1968 under the direction of new head coach Tony Knap. Following acceptance into the NCAA in October 1969, the Broncos were accepted into the Big Sky Conference a month later, with the conference becoming effective in July 1970. In 1970, the Broncos competed in the NCAA Division II (previously known as the College Division) in a brand new Bronco Stadium, which was built specifically for the purpose. The Broncos were 71–19–1 under Knap’s leadership from 1973 to 1975, winning three consecutive Big Sky championships.

He was replaced in 1976 by Jim Criner, who had worked as a defensive assistant under Dick Vermeil at UCLA the previous season, leading them to their first Rose Bowl victory. In 1977, BSU won the Big Sky Championship for the second time, and in 1978, the Broncos and the Big Sky Conference were elevated to the new Division I-AA level of competition (renamed FCS in 2006). NAU was placed on probation following a scouting violation late in the 1979 season.

The Broncos were unable to compete for the Big Sky title or advance to the I-AA playoffs as a result of the probation. NAU finished the season with a perfect 10–1 record, including a 7–0 mark in conference play. In 1980, after being released from probation, BSU won its first national championship, defeating defending champion Eastern Kentucky in the I-AA national championship game in Sacramento, California. When BSU faced Eastern Kentucky in the I-AA semifinals, they were defeated 17–23 by the Cougars, who finished second to Idaho State in the Big Sky Conference in 1981. The following season, Criner accepted the head football coaching position at Iowa State; his overall record at BSU was 59–21–1; he left the university after the 1982 season (.735).
