Baylor Bears football Biography and Career:

The Baylor Bears football team represents Baylor University in Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) collegiate football competitions. As a member of the Big 12 Conference, they compete against other teams from the same conference. After 64 seasons at the off-campus Baylor Stadium, which was renamed Floyd Casey Stadium in 1989, the Bears moved to McLane Stadium for the 2014 season, marking the team’s first season at the new on-campus facility. The football team at Baylor University has seen a broad range of success throughout the years, including an unbeaten 3–0 perfect record in 1900 and a 0–0 record in 2000.

Initially, beginning in the year 1898, the university’s home games were held on an unidentified field near the university’s campus. Carroll Field, located between the Carroll Science Building and Waco Creek, has been the site of the team’s home games since its inception in 1905. A mascot (the Baylor Bears) was not officially adopted by Baylor until December 14, 1914, after the conclusion of the 1914 football season.

Furthermore, Baylor did not become a member of an athletic league until 1914, after the completion of the football season, when it became a founding member of the Southwest Conference, which was established in 1914. Baylor’s first home game was against Toby’s Business College (based in Waco) in 1899, its first away game was against Austin College on 4 November 1900, and its first neutral-site game was against Texas A&M in 1901. Baylor’s first away game was against Texas A&M in 1901.

During the 1899 and 1900 seasons, the team was coached by R.H. Hamilton, who was distinguished by his 5–1–1 record, which included no losses. In 1899, Baylor played, and lost, its first game against Texas A&M, which would become a rivalry (until 2012, when Texas A&M changed conferences), the Battle of the Brazos, with more than 100 games played in the series by 2003. W.J. Ritchie coached the 1901 squad, which finished with a 5–3 record; it was during this season that the first games in the Baylor-Texas and Baylor-TCU series were played.

Texas Christian University (known as AddRan Male & Female College until 1902) was located in Waco from 1895 to 1910 and was one of Baylor’s most fierce football rivals until the Southwest Conference was disbanded in 1995. Texas Christian University was founded in Waco in 1895 as AddRan Male & Female College. When Baylor University defeated St. Edward’s University 28–0 on Thanksgiving Day in 1901, it became the first school to play football on Thanksgiving Day. J.C. Ewing took over as coach of the club in 1902 and guided it to its first losing season, finishing with a record of 3–4–2. In 1903, with a record of 4–3–1, R.N. Watts helped Baylor reestablish its winning history.

Following a prohibition against football violence in 1906, no team was fielded at Baylor, making 1906 one of only three seasons since 1899 in which the Bears did not participate in varsity football. The other two seasons were 1943 and 1944 (both during World War II). In 1907, Luther Burleson was the head coach of the resurrected football team, which finished with a 4–3–1 record. For the 1908 and 1909 seasons, E.J. Mills was the team’s captain; their 3–5–0 and 5–3–0 records were memorable for the team’s 1908 defeat to LSU and the world’s first “Homecoming” at the 1909 Thanksgiving Day game, which featured a concert, procession, and bonfire, among other activities. Baylor University still has the distinction of having the biggest homecoming procession in the world to this day.

A number of Baylor traditions are still alive today, including the Baylor-TCU rivalry game, which is one of the most-watched in all of college football, the Battle of the Brazos (which continued until 2011 when Texas A&M left the Big 12), membership in the historic Southwest Conference, the Baylor Line, which has been in existence since 1915, and the Baylor Bear mascot. When John Hill Westbrook of Elgin, Texas, joined the Baylor football team in 1966, he made history as the first African-American to compete on the varsity level in the Southwest Conference.

As a result, Baylor won the SWC Championship four times in a row (1915–1916–1922) and again in 1924. In 1956, Baylor came close to winning the SWC championship for the second time, but finished second and was headed to the 1957 Sugar Bowl, where they faced the unbeaten No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers. Baylor beat Johnny Majors and the No. 2 Volunteers 13–7 in the Big 12 Conference championship game. Before beating No. 1 rated Kansas State in 2012, this was the highest-ranked opponent Baylor has ever beaten in a single game.

The SWC Championship won by Baylor in 1924 would be the last for many decades, until the Bears won it again in 1974 under the direction of Grant Teaff, who was then in his third season as head coach. The Bears also competed in the 1952 Orange Bowl (against Georgia Tech), twice in the Gator Bowl (against Auburn and Florida), the Bluebonnet (beating LSU) and Dixie (against Wake Forest) bowls, as well as the Gotham Bowl (beating Wake Forest) (beating No. 10 ranked Utah St in New York City).
