The Army Black Knights football team, formerly known as the Army Cadets, represents the United States Military Academy in the NCAA Division I football competition. The army is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The West Point Black Knights play their home games at Michie Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 38,000 people and is located in West Point, New York. In charge of the Black Knights is head coach Jeff Monken, who is in his ninth season in the position. Armed Forces have been crowned national champion five times, most recently in 1914, followed by titles in 1916 and 1944 to 1946. However, Army has only claimed championships from 1944 to 1946.

The Army Black Knights have played as an independent since 1998, with the exception of seven seasons (1998–2004) during when the team was a part of Conference USA. The Army football team will be one of seven FBS schools with football programmes that will not be affiliated with a conference at the start of the next college football season in 2021. The other six institutions are BYU, Liberty, New Mexico State, Notre Dame, UConn, and UMass. But for the rest of their athletic endeavours, Army is mostly associated with the Patriot League. Dr Doc Blanchard (1945), Glenn Davis (1946), and Pete Dawkins (1947) are among former Army players who have won the Heisman Trophy (1958).

When the three main service academies compete for the Commander-in-Trophy Chiefs in football, the winning school is determined by a tie-breaker system. The Air Force, Army, and Navy are the current winners of the trophy (or retained by the previous winner in the event of a three-way tie). Army has won nine CIC Trophies, the most recent of which was awarded in 2020.

The Army’s football programme had its start on November 29, 1890, when the Navy challenged the cadets to a game of the then-new sport of American football. The army was victorious against the Navy at West Point in the same year, but the Navy was victorious again at Annapolis the next year. [4] The academies continue to face off in December in what is normally the last regular-season Division I college football game of the season. Army’s victory against Navy in the 2016 Army-Navy Game represented the team’s first recent victory over Navy after fourteen straight defeats to the Navy. From 1944 through 1950, the Cadets had a record of 57 victories, three defeats, and four ties. Over the course of this period, Army won three national championship games.

Under coach Earl Black, Army’s football team achieved its zenith of success during World War II, winning three consecutive national titles in 1944, 1945, and 1946 while also producing three Heisman Trophy winners: Doc Blanchard (1945), Glenn Davis (1946), and Pete Dawkins (1947). (1958). In their early coaching days, former NFL coaches Vince Lombardi and Bill Parcells worked as Army assistant coaches.

The football team’s home games are held at Michie Stadium, which is named for Earl Black, who was the team’s first quarterback. Cadets are required to attend football games, and the Corps must remain on the field for the length of the game. When the team enters the field before a home game, a representative from one of the four regiments marches onto it and leads everyone in traditional Army cheers.

Historically, Army teams were referred to as “Cadets” for a long period of time. Several newspapers referred to the football squad as “the Black Knights of the Hudson” throughout the 1940s. For the next several years, the terms “Cadets” and “Black Knights” were used interchangeably until the team was formally designated as the Black Knights in 1999.

Between the 1998 and 2004 seasons, Army’s football team was a member of the Conference USA, but the programme returned to its old independent status with the 2005 season. Navy and Air Force compete for the Commander-in-Trophy, Chief’s which is awarded to the best overall military performance.
