College football is represented by the Oklahoma State Cowboys, who are the representatives of Oklahoma State University–Stillwater. In addition to being a member of the Big 12 Conference, the squad participates at the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level of competition. Despite his lack of football success, Gass remained at Ohio State for many years following his departure as football coach, serving as the school’s athletic director for a period of time.

When head coach Dave Smith took over in 1974, the Cowboys were able to experience their first winning season in nine years, a feat that had previously been impossible. Despite his efforts, Smith was unable to remain in Stillwater and instead accepted the head coaching post at SMU after just one season.
