Oklahoma State Cowboys football Biography and Career:

College football is represented by the Oklahoma State Cowboys, who are the representatives of Oklahoma State University–Stillwater. In addition to being a member of the Big 12 Conference, the squad participates at the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level of competition. Currently, in his 17th season as head coach, Mike Gundy guides the Cowboys to a winning record. Stillwater, Oklahoma, is the site of Oklahoma State’s home games, which are played at Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Oklahoma A&M Aggies (also known as the Tigers) competed in their first season of football in 1900 and joined the Southwest Conference at the start of the 1915 season, marking their first appearance in a conference championship game. The Oklahoma A&M program became a member of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) in 1925. The Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) was formed in 1928 and divided into two conferences: the Big Six Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference. The University of Texas at Arlington was the lone big institution to join the smaller MVC.

Jim Lookabaugh coached the Aggies for eleven seasons, guiding them to a 9–0 season and a national title in 1945, after an 8–1 performance the previous year. Lookabaugh was an Ohio State alumnus who lettered in a variety of sports. According to the American Football Coaches Association, Oklahoma State was granted the 1945 national title on a retroactive basis in October 2016. (AFCA). Lookabaugh stepped down at the end of the 1949 season, having compiled a 58–41–6 record during his tenure.

While at Oklahoma A&M from 1950 to 1954, Jennings B. Whitworth produced a 22–27–1 record, which includes just one winning season, a 7–3 performance in 1953. Whitworth retired from coaching in 1954. Following the 1954 season, Whitworth left A&M to take over as head coach at the University of Alabama.

After the Johnny Bright incident, in which Oklahoma A&M players and coaches attacked an African American player from Drake University, the school’s administration attempted to cover up and deny the occurrence for more than half a century, the university was forced to resign.

With the Oklahoma A&M Cowboys, Cliff Speegle took over as head coach. A 36–42–3 record was recorded by the Cowboys during Speegle’s tenure as coach, which includes three consecutive winning seasons from 1957 to 1959. Speegle was fired after the 1962 season as a consequence of the team’s dismal record, which included a 0–8 record versus rival Oklahoma.

For the 1958–59 academic year, A&M announced that it would be entering (or rejoining, depending on your point of view) what had become known as the Big Seven for the first time. For two years, the Cowboys operated on their own as part of a transitional time in their history. Oklahoma A&M University was renamed Oklahoma State University on May 15, 1957, after the state of Oklahoma. In 1958, they were formally admitted to the Big Eight Conference, which had been renamed.

Former Bear Bryant assistant Phil Cutchin guided Oklahoma State to its first victory against Oklahoma in 20 years, but the Cowboys were unable to replicate their success in Stillwater, finishing with a record of 19–38–2. In Cutchin’s stead, the Ohio State administration, which wanted to see a winning product on the field, stepped in.

Oklahoma State’s football team continued to suffer under head coach Floyd Gass, an Oklahoma State alumnus who served as the Cowboys’ head coach for three seasons. During his time with the club, he guided them to three consecutive losing seasons. As the team’s on-field performance deteriorated, fan and administrative support became more difficult to come by. Despite his lack of football success, Gass remained at Ohio State for many years following his departure as football coach, serving as the school’s athletic director for a period of time.

When head coach Dave Smith took over in 1974, the Cowboys were able to experience their first winning season in nine years, a feat that had previously been impossible. Despite his efforts, Smith was unable to remain in Stillwater and instead accepted the head coaching post at SMU after just one season.
