Bonnie Henry Biography and Career:

Bonnie Henry, the middle sister of four, had the extraordinary opportunity to grow up in a military family. One of the three main armoured regiments in the Canadian Army, her father was a major in Lord Strathcona’s Horse. She moved around a lot as a kid because her dad was in the military and they were posted all around Canada and Europe. Henry initially learned of her desire to study medicine on one of her many visits to see her sick sister when she was a young child. Her sibling had just had her appendix removed and was recovering at home.

Henry received his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick between the years of 1986 and 1988. She attended Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for her medical training between 1986 to 1990. Next, Henry pursued a Master of Public Health in epidemiology at San Diego State University. She also has a background in preventive medicine thanks to her time at UC San Diego and a residency at the University of Toronto’s Department of Family and Community Medicine.

At the age of 23, while still in medical school, Bonnie Henry joined the Royal Canadian Navy. After finishing medical school, she was assigned to CFB Esquimalt, which is near Victoria in British Columbia. After more than a decade of service, she retired from the Navy at the rank of lieutenant. Henry, throughout her time in the service, served as a medical officer aboard the HMCS Annapolis, HMCS Provider, and HMCS Regina. She also became certified as a medical diver, ship’s diver, and flight surgeon after undergoing extensive training in these specific areas.

In 2001, Henry became an assistant medical officer of health with the Toronto Public Health Department. When SARS broke out in 2003, she oversaw the city’s response operations. Also, she has experience working abroad to curb the spread of disease. She helped with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) efforts to contain Ebola in Uganda and end polio in Pakistan.

The WHO spearheaded both of these initiatives. Henry relocated back to the province in 2005 to take up a position as a medical epidemiologist at the BCCDC. Between the years of 2007 and 2014, she held a number of medical leadership positions at this organization. During the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, Henry served on the Canadian Pandemic Coordinating Committee.

She also oversaw the emergency planning for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver. From 2014 until 2017, she worked as British Columbia’s Deputy Provincial Health Officer. Henry has been the health officer for the province of British Columbia since 2018. On top of all that, she is now an associate professor at the University of British Columbia. Henry penned “The Definitive Guide to Viruses, Bacteria, Parasites, and Disease: Soap, Water, and Common Sense” (2009). The title comes from an excerpt by Sir William Osler. Bonnie Henry rose to prominence as a leader during the COVID-19 outbreak that ravaged British Columbia in the year 2020.

She became known as a leader who kept her cool under pressure and cared about others. Her liberal policies were praised for being effective while also being praised for being relatively light on citizens. When Henry was the premier of British Columbia, the province was an early adopter of standardized testing and isolation policies. In addition, it made substantial investments in contact tracking and imposed limits on the mobility of healthcare workers between long-term care facilities.

Since August of 2014, Dr. Bonnie Henry has been acting as British Columbia’s Deputy Provincial Health Officer.
