Bryan Ferry Biography and Career:

For his work with Roxy Music in the 1970s and ’80s, Bryan Ferry laid the groundwork for art-rock while also successfully updating the songbook’s limitations. Although Ferry’s solo career has included some superb self-penned tracks, he is best renowned for his daring renditions of songs from the rock and pop canons.

When Ferry takes the stage, you can hear his love of everything from Motown and Dylan to the 1920s and 1930s Great American Songbook, all of which he incorporates into his lounge-singer image. Roxy Music reformed in 2001 following rumors of a reunion and went on multiple tours throughout the following decade.

Ferry, the son of a coal miner, began his musical career as a singer with the rock band the Banshees while he studied art at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne under the guidance of pop conceptualist Richard Hamilton. Later, he was a member of the Gas Board, a soul group featuring Graham Simpson on bass, and the two of them created Roxy Music in 1970.

Ferry’s debut solo album was released in 1973, just a few years after Roxy Music had been a huge hit. While the group’s arty glam rock was still present, Ferry’s solo work and the final Roxy Music records took a different direction, focusing on elegant synth-pop interpretations of ’60s hits like Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy For The Devil,” and The Beatles’ “You Won’t See Me,” all done in Ferry’s distinctive, coolly dramatic style.

When and where are we going next? As a primary focus, Roxy Music remained Ferry’s primary focus, but in 1974, he returned with a second solo effort, Another Time Another Place, another collection of cover songs ranging from ‘You Are My Sunshine, to ‘It Ain’t Me, Baby, to ‘Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.’

A collection of Roxy Music remixes and reworked versions of Roxy Music songs appeared on his third album, Let’s Stick Together, released in 1976. A year after the release of In Your Mind in 1977, Ferry released The Bride Stripped Bare, a work inspired by his relationship with model Jerry Hall, which included a mixture of new and cover songs.

Before Boys and Girls, Ferry’s first solo album after the Roxy breakup, he had not recorded another solo album since. When he collaborated with Johnny Marr on “The Right Stuff” on his 1987 album Bete Noir, he scored his only US Top 40 hit with “Kiss and Tell.” Following the release of Taxi in 1993 came Mamouna, a compilation of originals, then in 1999 Ferry returned with As Time Goes By, a collection of standards.

There were whispers of a Roxy Music reunion following the band’s brief tour in support of As Time Goes By. For the first time, Ferry accompanied Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera on a tour of Europe and the United States the following summer. It was the band’s first outing in more than a decade, and it was a celebration of their greatest hits. Frantic Ferry made a triumphant solo return with Frantic in the summer of 2002.

Dylanesque, a collection of Bob Dylan covers, was released in 2007 with the help of various longstanding friends and collaborators of Dylan (including Brian Eno, Chris Spedding, Paul Carrack, and Robin Trower). For Ferry’s 2010 album Olympia, the Astralwerks label signed him. Recorded The Jazz Age in 2012 with his orchestra, Bryan Ferry. His band re-recorded some of his most popular songs in a 1920s jazz style for this totally instrumental album.

For Ferry’s fourteenth studio album, he reunited with longtime collaborator Rhett Davies in 2014. It was not until November that Ferry’s mid-’80s sound was revitalized with the release of Avonmore, which featured appearances by Johnny Marr, Nile Rodgers, and Marcus Miller. Ferry made his Hollywood Bowl debut in the spring of 2017 after beginning on a massive world tour, performing practically the entire set backed by a full orchestra.

On top of all of his cabaret work for Babylon Berlin, he also wrote and performed several songs for it in the same year. In 2018, Ferry and his jazz orchestra created a full-length album, Bitter-Sweet, which contained those tracks. Roxy Music’s 2019 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was a highlight of Ferry’s final decade of touring in the 2010s. Earlier in 2020, the live album Live at the Royal Albert Hall, 1974 was made available as a historical archival package.
