Chip Hale Biography and Career:

In 2023, legendary former Arizona Wildcat player and coach Chip Hale will begin his second year at the helm of the program that bears his name. On July 5, 2021, Vice President and Director of Athletics Dave Heeke announced him as the next head coach of the Arizona baseball team. On July 7, 2021, he was formally presented at a press conference.

Hale, who played for the Wildcats in Tucson from 1984 to 1987 and held the school records for games played, hits, and total bases, has returned to Arizona after almost two decades as a professional coach. He’s the Wildcats’ sixth modern-era and seventeenth overall head coach.

After spending 2021 as the third base coach for the Detroit Tigers, Hale has relocated back to Tucson. Hale has been a central league head coach for 15 years, with stops including Detroit, the Washington Nationals (2018-20), the Oakland Athletics (2012-14, 2017), the Arizona Diamondbacks (2007-09, 2015-16), and the New York Mets (2010-11).

Hale will be the next head baseball coach at the University of Arizona in July 2021. To continue coaching and developing our Wildcats to be champions on the field and in the classroom, we will work relentlessly to build on the success achieved here. We want to visit Omaha often with the cooperation of the University of Arizona and the Wildcat Family.

Hale’s tenure as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2015 and 2016 was the highlight of his fifteen years in Major League Baseball. As D-backs manager, he oversaw a winning record of over 150 games and guided the careers of superstars like Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock. In 2015, his first season with the D-backs, the franchise’s batting average, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, stolen bases, OBP, and slugging % all ranked in the top three in the National League.

Before coming to Detroit in 2018, Hale spent the previous three years (2018-20) as the bench coach for the Washington Nationals. The 2019 World Series triumph was the crowning achievement of his tenure in the nation’s capital.

With Hale at the helm, players like Bryce Harper, Juan Soto, Trea Turner, Anthony Rendon, Matt Chapman, Paul Goldschmidt, Zack Greinke, Josh Donaldson, Dan Haren, and Justin Upton flourished under his tutelage.

In 2004 and 2005, Hale was the manager of the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders when he began his professional coaching career. After a stellar minor league career, Hale was named Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year in 2006 after leading the Sidewinders to a 91-53 record and the league championship.

The renowned infielder played four years with the Wildcats, earning a 1986 NCAA title, 1987 Pac-10 South Player of the Year accolades, 1987 Tom Hansen Medal honors, and First Team All-Pac-10 South honors. He participated in 255 games throughout his tenure with Arizona and set the franchise marks for at-bats (978), hits (337), runs (162), and total bases (507) in those categories. In 1994, Hale was honored with induction into Arizona’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Hale was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the 17th round of the 1987 Major League Baseball Draft after an impressive college career. After that, he had a successful Major League career with the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Dodgers that lasted seven years.

Arizona’s first season with Hale at the helm was a huge success, with the Wildcats making their 41st appearance in the NCAA Tournament and winning two elimination games in the NCAA Coral Gables Regional. Only four first-year head coaches in the whole nation, including Hale, qualified for the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats beat Kansas State 8-6 on February 18, 2022, giving coach Hale his first win in charge. Arizona ended the season with a 39-25 overall record and a 17-15 conference mark, both winning spots.

After the season, two of Hale’s Wildcats were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Oakland Athletics catcher and all-star Daniel Susac was taken 19th overall, making him the 12th player in school history to be selected in the first round of the MLB draft. Tanner O’Tremba, an outfielder named All-Pac-12, was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 15th round.

Arizona’s 2022 success on the field resulted from a well-rounded strategy emphasizing hitting, pitching, and defense. When the season was through, the Wildcats’ offense placed in the top four in the Pac-12 in runs scored, hits, triples, home runs, RBI, walks, total bases, and extra-base hits. Arizona scored over 6.5 runs per game on average, thanks to the efforts of players like Susac, O’Tremba, Chase Davis, Garen Caulfield, and others.

With Hale as his manager, Susac amassed 100 hits, tying for sixth in the country and making him the 10th player in school history to have a 100-hit campaign. The 2022 Arizona Wildcats lead the Pac-12 with 26 triples, the most in the league since the team relocated to Hi Corbett in 2012.

The Wildcat’s defense also improved dramatically during the year, culminating in a season-ending fielding .972% was five points better than the previous year’s record and the Wildcats’ best defensive performance since 2018. The ’22 Cats were also very good at turning double plays, finishing the year rated fourth in the country with 57.

Regarding pitching, Arizona had two players named to the Pac-12’s All-Conference team. Right-handed Quinn Flanagan became the first Wildcat bullpen pitcher to be named to the First Team Pac-12 All-Conference since 2016, while southpaw Garrett Irvin received the first all-conference distinction of his career.
