Cincinnati Bearcats football Biography and Career:

The University of Cincinnati Bearcats football program represents the University of Cincinnati in college football. The Bearcats compete at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level as members of the American Athletic Conference, a so-called “Group of Five,” though this will change with the move to the Big 12. The Bearcats have played their home games in Nippert Stadium, which has been renovated several times since its original construction in 1924.

The Bearcats have an overall record of more than.500, having earned their 600th win in the program’s history in 2017. Following the Bearcats’ admission to the Big East for the 2005 season, they have had a 144–70 record while earning 13 bowl trips, seven conference crowns, four BCS/NY6 Bowl bids, and 29 first-round picks in the NFL draught. In either 2023 or 2024, the University of Cincinnati will join the Big 12 Conference, which is one of the Power Five leagues.

After fielding its first squad in 1885, the Bearcat football program is one of the nation’s oldest in terms of continuous operation. Cincinnati played Miami in the first college football game to be played in the state of Ohio, which took place in 1888. That marked the beginning of a rivalry that is now the eighth-oldest and 11th-longest-running in NCAA Division I college football history.

Robert Burch was the head coach of the Cincinnati Reds from 1909 to 1911, having a record of 16–8–2 during his tenure. While he was in charge, the Cincinnati Reds were invited to join the Ohio Athletic Conference, where they would stay until 1927.

George Babcock was employed as a professor of sports and physical education at the University of Cincinnati in March 1927, and he served in that position until his retirement in 1961. In his four seasons as the Bearcat’s head football coach (1927–30), he had a record of 12–21–3 while leading the team.

Sid Gillman, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the National Football League Hall of Fame, was the mastermind behind one of the most successful periods in Cincinnati football history. Before moving on to the professional levels, he guided the Bearcats to three conference championships and a pair of bowl game trips during his six seasons (1949–54) as their head coach. In the early 1950s, Cincinnati became noted for its aerial assault, thanks in part to Gillman’s development of the passing offenses that would make him successful in the professional ranks.

From 1955 until 1960, George Blackburn served as the Bearcats’ head coach, accumulating a 25–27–6 record during his tenure. It was under Blackburn’s tenure, in 1957, that the Bearcats were admitted to the Missouri Valley Conference, where they remained until its dissolution in 1969.

Chuck Studley departed UMass to become the 25th head football coach in the history of the Bearcats. Studley’s teams won two conference titles during his tenure as coach, in 1963 and 1964. However, Studley’s teams underperformed during his remaining four seasons, and he was fired following the 1966 season.

Homer Rice, an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma, was appointed to take over for Studley. Jim McKenzie, the former head coach of Oklahoma, died of a major heart attack shortly after taking the post as head coach at Cincinnati. Following Jim’s death, the University of Oklahoma’s athletic director and president phoned Homer Rice to urge that he return to the university to take over as head coach. As a result, he had already hired his staff in Cincinnati, and he turned down the Oklahoma position in order to maintain his commitment to his Cincinnati team. In his two seasons at Cincinnati, Rice has an 8–10–1 record to his credit.

The Bearcats were the nation’s best passing team in 1968, according to the NCAA. When it came to overall offense, quarterback Greg Cook led the way, with receiver/kicker Jim O’Brien taking home the national scoring title. Cook was named Rookie of the Year in his first season with the Cincinnati Bengals a year later. After that, O’Brien went on to make the game-winning field goal for the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl two years later.
