As a member of the Appalachian State Mountaineers Football Team, you will be representing the Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, on the intercollegiate American football field. Since 2014, the Mountaineers have participated in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Sun Belt Conference, which is the highest level of competition available. Kids Brewer Stadium, named for former Appalachian head coach Kidd Brewer, serves as the home field for the Mountaineers. Appalachian State University first competed in organised football in 1928. Graydon Eggers was the head coach for the first year. The Mountaineers played as an independent until becoming a founder member of the North State Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1931. Kidd Brewer served as the Mountaineers’ head coach from 1935 to 1938, during which time the club advanced to two playoff bowl games. After being undefeated and unscored upon during the regular season, Brewer’s 1937 club lost a playoff game against Southern Miss, 7–0, and is most recognised for going unbeaten and unscored upon. Under the direction of E. C. Duggins (1947–50 and 1952–55), Appalachian had continuous success.
Three additional North State Conference titles were won by the Mountaineers during Duggins’ eight years as head coach, and the Mountaineers appeared in seven bowl games. From 1968 through 1971, the Mountaineers played as an independent before entering the Southern Conference. Jim Duncan was the head coach at Appalachian State University from 1960 to 1964, posting a 31–15–2 record during his tenure. Following Duncan, Carl Messere took over as the team’s manager, with a record of 34–26–1 from 1965 to 1970.
