Virginia Tech Hokies football Biography and Career:

Known as the Virginia Tech Hokies football team, they compete in the American football league on behalf of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Hokies football teams participate in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division. The team has formerly participated in the Big East Conference. At Lane Stadium, which is situated in Blacksburg, Virginia, and has a seating capacity of more than 65,000 people, the team plays their home games. According to ESPN’s 2007 “Top 20 Scariest Places to Play,” Lane Stadium is one of the country’s loudest stadiums, and it was ranked the second most frightening place to play. It was also named the top home-field advantage in the nation by Rivals.com in 2005, and it continues to remain so now.

More than 700 victories and 33 bowl appearances have been recorded by the Hokies throughout the course of 124 seasons, including the BCS National Championship game in 2000. The Virginia Tech Hokies have the 23rd most victories out of all Division I college football teams. A series of 27 consecutive bowl appearances, dating back to the 1993 Independence Bowl and continuing through the 2019 Belk Bowl, was established by the program in 1993. College football’s fourth-longest string of straight bowl game appearances in the nation’s history was achieved this season. In addition, the school has won eleven conference championships (3 South Atlantic, 1 Southern, 3 Big East, and 4 ACC) and produced eight All-Americans throughout its tenure in the league.

On October 21, 1892, the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now known as Virginia Tech) hosted its inaugural football game versus St. Albans Lutheran Boys School (Radford, Virginia). A plowed-off wheat field that was “about as flat as a side of Brush Mountain” was used for the game’s playing surface. The Hokies won their first game, 14–10, but were crushed 10–0 by Radford eight days later on their return trip to the Mountaineer Athletic Center. The VAMC’s first few teams competed in cadet grey and black, but in 1896 the colors were changed to Burnt Orange and Chicago Maroon, which was a unique color combination among educational institutions at the time of the transition.

The only team to beat them was rival Virginia in 1899, 1901, and 1903. Hunter Carpenter, the team’s star player, returned to Virginia Tech in 1905 after spending a year at the University of North Carolina for one more try at defeating the Hokies. Carpenter was a key contributor to VPI’s 9–1 season, which was the greatest in the school’s history up to that point. He was not selected to the All-America team because Walter Camp, the man in charge of selecting the squad at the time, said that he would never pick a player who he had not personally seen play before.

The 1909 squad wins the Southern Championship for the first time. During this season, the squad was referred to as the “Gobblers” for the first time in literature, a moniker that would become the official nickname in 1912. VPI became a member of the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletic Association after the conclusion of the 1911 season (SAIAA). In 1916 and 1918, they were victorious in the conference. Following the dissolution of the SAIAA in 1921, six of its member institutions went on to become founding members of the Southern Conference.

From 1925 through 1928, Frank Peake and the “Pony Express” backfield were the driving force behind Tech. Scotty MacArthur, Herbert “Mac” McEver, and Tommy Tomko were among others who joined him. When the Colgate Red Raiders were defeated 6–0 by the University of New York in New York in 1927, Peake rushed for over 200 yards and scored the game’s only points. During a three-game run, he amassed 306, 314, and 353 yards rushing and returning the ball, respectively. In eight games, he was credited with 1,761 yards of total offense. There were 930 yards from scrimmage and 831 yards on punts and kickoffs. A punt was returned for a score by him in 1928 against Virginia, despite the fact that he had hurt his hip on the sidelines of the game. In 1932, Georgia Tech defeated them 7–6. Bill Grinus made a diving save to prevent the extra point from being scored.

This was Virginia Tech’s first participation in a postseason bowl game since the 1947 Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas when they faced off against the University of Cincinnati. Tech finished with a 3–3–3 record that season and was selected as the third choice after the Border Conference winners Hardin–Simmons University and the runner-up Texas Tech Red Raiders both refused the invitation to the Bowl Championship Series. Tech was defeated 18–6 in the game.

One of the Gobblers’ most memorable seasons occurred in 1954 when they went undefeated for the first and only time in the school’s history. The squad concluded the season with an 8–0–1 record and was placed 16th in the Associated Press post-season football poll. It’s one blemish that came in a 7–7 draw with William & Mary at Blacksburg, Virginia, during the regular season. No post-season bowl game was played despite the team’s success throughout the regular season. The 1963 squad was the only one to win the SoCon title in Tech’s history.
