Cliff Richard Biography and Career:

Harry Rodger Webb was the name given to Cliff when he was born. His father, Rodger Oscar Webb, was employed as a caterer by the Indian Railways, and his mother, Dorothy Marie Dazely, was a dormitory matron at La Martiniere Girls’ School in Lucknow. Cliff’s full name is Harry Rodger Webb. After relocating to Calcutta with his family in 1945, he began his formal education at the St. Thomas’ Church School in Howrah. In 1948, just after India achieved its independence from British rule, the family relocated to Tilbury in the English county of Essex.

They made their home in Carshalton, Surrey, until his father moved the family to Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in 1949 to take a position at Thorn Electrical Industries. The Kings Road Junior Mixed Infants School was his alma mater at this location. After that, he continued his education at Cheshunt Secondary Modern School, where he received his diploma in 1957. At the age of 16, his father bought him a guitar, and he started working as a temporary clerk for Atlas Lamps shortly afterward. Prior to being a member of the Dick Teague Skiffle Group, he established his own band, the Quintones singing group, in the year 1957.

Soon after that, he became the main singer for the rock and roll group known as “Drifters,” and in 1958, when he was performing at the Regal Ballroom in Ripley, Derbyshire, he decided to take the stage name, Cliff Richard. His track “Schoolboy Crush-Move It” became an immediate success, reaching its highest position on the charts in the UK at No. 2. In the latter half of 1958 and the first few months of 1959, he penned the song “High-Class Baby” and “Livin’ Lovin’ Doll.”

It was the year 1959 that he made his first appearance in the movie “Serious Charge.” After some time, the band changed its name to “The Shadows.” He had a leading role in the film “The Young Ones,” which was released in 1961 and was a smash hit. The film’s title song became very well-known and was eventually sold in excess of one million copies. In 1965, he released the song “On My Word,” which went on to become another huge success and reached number one on the charts in the UK.

It was followed by another smashing song in 1967 titled “The Day I Met Marie,” which also landed on the music charts of the United Kingdom. In the same year, he appeared as an actor in the movie titled “Two a Penny,” in which he played the part of Jamie Hopkins, a character who becomes involved in trafficking drugs. In 1968, the band known as “The Shadows” came to an end, although Richard continued to release successful songs. In the film “Take Me High” from 1973, he also made his last appearance as an actor. This year, ‘The Shadows’ also saw a lineup change.

Up until this point, he did not get a warm welcome in the United States, and his renown was confined to the United Kingdom solely. However, in 1976, he released an album titled “I’m Nearly Famous,” which quickly became a massive success throughout the world. This helped him revive his career, which had stalled after the advent of the band known as the “Beatles.” Another one of his songs that was a chart-topper was “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” which was released in 1979 and sold 5,000,000 copies all over the globe. In 1980, he collaborated with Olivia Newton-John to create a duet titled “Suddenly,” which reached no. 20 on the UK singles chart.

In 1986, he collaborated with the well-known singer Sarah Brightman to record the duet “All I Ask of You” for the musical “The Phantom of the Opera.” Throughout the decade of the 1980s, he continued to be one of the most successful singers, with the majority of his songs reaching number one. During the Wimbledon Championship in 1996, he provided amusement for the spectators by performing on Centre Court on a wet day. In 2001, he published his studio album with the title Wanted, and not long after that, he came out with another album under the title Cliff at Christmas, which was also quite popular.

In 2008, the year he celebrated his half-century anniversary in the music business, he issued the eight-disc box set ‘And They Said It Wouldn’t Last (My 50 Years in Music)’. The following year, he became a member of “The Shadows” in order to participate in “The Royal Variety Performance.”

Richard and “The Shadows” released their first studio album together in forty years, titled “Reunited,” in September 2009; this was their first record since they had originally collaborated. In 2011, he collaborated with a number of the most well-known R&B and soul singers in the United States to make the album “Soulicious,” which was made available to the public in October of the same year. On June 4, 2012, he appeared as one of the singers at the Diamond Jubilee concert that was hosted in the area around Buckingham Palace.

His single, “Living Doll,” was an enormous success, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart not once but twice, and it sold 2,000,000 copies all over the globe. More than one million copies of the singer’s soundtrack album, titled “The Young Ones,” were sold in the United Kingdom, propelling the record to the top spot on the UK Albums Chart.
The album titled “Wired for Sound,” which was published in 1981, was another huge smash. It stayed at the top of the UK album charts for over 25 weeks and sold more than a million copies worldwide.

On June 17, 1995, he was appointed a Knight Bachelor in recognition of his services to the music industry. In 2002, the BBC compiled a list of the “100 Greatest Britons,” and based that ranking on public votes they collected. He was ranked 56th on that list.
