Erykah Badu Biography and Career:

Erica Abi Wright was the name given to Erykah Badu when she was born on February 26, 1971, in Dallas, Texas, United States. Her father, William Wright Jr., spent most of his life apart from the rest of the family. Nobody knew why he was sentenced to a significant amount of time behind bars. In 1975, he went missing, only to reappear in 1995, twenty years after his disappearance. Her mother, Kolleen Gipson-Wright, who was a well-known and highly regarded performer in the community theatre, nearly single-handedly brought up her children.

She received assistance in this endeavor from both her own mother, Thelma Gipson, as well as from her mother-in-law, Viola Wright. During the period when her mother was performing on stage, Erykah hung around with these other women quite a bit. Erykah was born first among the two girls that her parents had. She has a younger sister who was born in 1974 and goes by the name Korean (Nayrok). In the latter part of the year 1983, her mother gave birth to another child, a male who was later given the name Levin. Erica was oblivious to their relative lack of wealth since everything was so well kept and organized.

In spite of the fact that her biological father was not there throughout her youth, she was showered with love and support by her extended family, particularly her cousin Robert Bradford. Her mother, a rock of reliability, stood tall above everything else in her life. In addition to instilling in her the values of self-discipline and an active lifestyle, her mother instilled in her the belief that “what counts is on the inside… not what you look like.” In addition, she instilled a passion for music in her children by introducing them to artists such as Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder at an early age.

The aesthetic sensibilities and the will to perform were passed down to Erica by her mother. She would often perform in front of the mirror, making up songs and acting as if she was a backing vocalist for Chaka Khan. In addition to that, she would force her grandma to sit up and watch her perform as she sang, danced, and acted. Erykah Badu made her debut in front of an audience in 1975 at the Dallas Theatre Centre, playing with her mother. By the time she was seven years old, she had already begun studying the piano.

The song “The Greatest Love of All” was her all-time favorite. Her natural ability was seen very immediately while she was still in elementary school when she started her official schooling. She participated in the production of “Annie” while she was in the first grade, skipping and singing the song “Somebody Snitched On Me.” She spent her time off singing in the choir at the First Baptist Church, where she was able to hone her abilities as a choral performer. Erykah Badu, when she was younger, started to acquire an interest in African culture and clothes in addition to her acting and singing careers.

She began by going to various festivals, particularly the Harambee Festival in South Dallas. This sparked her curiosity about African traditions and clothing. These excursions were the inspiration for the towering headpiece that she would one day wear. In 1980, she became a member of a dancing ensemble known as Mahogany and began her dance training under the instruction of Dr. Van Gilbert. After that, she continued her education by taking official ballet classes with the Etta Piper Jamison Company.

In addition, she had begun rapping and hip-hop dancing by the year 1982. When it came time for her to choose a secondary school, she went with Booker T. Washington High School, which is a magnet school in Dallas that focuses on the arts. Around the course of her education there, she rejected what she saw as a slave name, altering the spelling of her own name from Erica to Erykah and replacing Wright with Badu, likely in the year 1984.

She continued her education in the performing arts at Grambling State University, a historically black university located in Grambling, Louisiana, from the time that she graduated high school until the year 1993. After then, she went back to Dallas without finishing her education, mostly because she wanted to focus on music instead. Erykah Badu began her professional life in the field of music education in Dallas in 1993. In addition, she was a dance and theatre instructor at the South Dallas Cultural Center for a while.  She worked part-time as a server at a variety of restaurants so that she could supplement her income.

Erykah Free is the name of the hip-hop duet that she and her cousin Robert Free Bradford put together at some point in the recent past. Very quickly after that, they began performing live music, gaining opening gigs at local venues, and recording a nineteen-song demo album titled “Country Cousins.”
When Erykah opened a gig for D’Angelo in 1994, it was the beginning of her big break. Because of him, she was brought to the notice of Kedar Massenburg, who is a record producer in the United States and the founder of Kedar Entertainment. After being impressed by her, he arranged for her to record a duet with D’Angelo entitled “Your Precious Love.”

In 1995, she went to Brooklyn after signing a deal with Kedar Entertainment to become an actress. In January of 1996, she made her debut with the song “On & On.” The song spent two weeks in the top spot on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in the United States, and it also reached the top spot on the UK Singles Chart. Erykah Badu also released her first studio album that year, titled Baduizm. It was released on February 11, 1997, by Kedar Records, and it was met with unanimous acclaim from reviewers. Not only did they laud the musical style of the album, but they also complimented her “artistic vision,” which established her as the torchbearer of soul music.
