Esther McVey Biography and Career:

Esther Louise McVey (born October 24, 1967) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. Since 2010, she has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wirral West, where she served until her defeat in 2015. From 2013 to 2015, she served as Minister of State for Employment.

McVey was appointed as a privy counselor in February 2014, and the Prime Minister granted him the additional privilege of attending Cabinet in July 2014. Formerly, she worked for the House of Commons as Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Disabled People (2012–2013). Prior to entering politics, McVey worked as a television host and businesswoman in the entertainment industry.


He was born in Liverpool and educated at the Belvedere School, before going on to study law at Queen Mary College (LLB) and radio journalism at City University. McVey is of Irish Catholic descent and was raised in Liverpool (MA). McVey received her MSc (with Distinction) in Corporate Governance from Liverpool John Moores University in July 2009, and she was also awarded the North of England Excellence Award for her work in the field.

From 2000 to 2006, McVey served as a director of the J. G. McVey & Co. construction company in Liverpool, which was run by her father and specialized in demolition and site clearance, as well as land reclamation and regeneration. In 2003, the corporation got two immediate prohibition safety notices, both of which were complied with by the organization.

After graduating from university, McVey returned to the family business while also pursuing a master’s degree in Radio Journalism at City University, before embarking on a career in the media as a presenter and producer.

Following her return to Liverpool, McVey established her own company, Making It (UK) Ltd, which provides training for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as office space for new startup businesses. This led to her founding “Winning Women,” which was supported by funding from the North West Regional Development Agency.

McVey, a supporter of the Conservative Way Forward, was chosen to represent the Conservative Party in the 2005 general election for the Wirral West constituency, where he came in second place to incumbent Labour MP Stephen Hesford by 1,097 votes.

After winning Wirral West with 42.5 percent of the vote in the 2010 general election, McVey went on to win the seat of Liverpool City Council by a margin of 2,436 votes over Labour’s Phil Davies. McVey served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to then-Employment Minister Chris Grayling during the 2010 election campaign.

In the position of Parliamentary Undersecretary for Work and Pensions, she served from September 2012 to October 2013. In December 2013, she was formally reprimanded for using House of Commons notepaper and postage to campaign for the Conservative Party; she apologized and repaid the £300 costs incurred as a result of her actions.

Cameron appointed her to the position of Minister of State for Employment in the Department for Work and Pensions as part of his reshuffle on October 7, 2013. On February 27, 2014, McVey was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council. She emphasizes the significance of having a strong work ethic and decries laziness and idleness as social ills to be avoided.

While McVey was one of a growing number of female politicians who were working to reverse the male dominance in the House of Commons, she was also the target of criticism, as she was on April 15, 2014, when she was criticized on social media for attacking the Wirral Labour Group in a tweet published while a memorial service for the Hillsborough disaster was being held at Anfield, Liverpool.


Her apology for the mistimed communication was later made in a radio interview with BBC Radio Merseyside when she also indicated that she did not directly send the tweet. With a 417-vote victory in the 2015 general election, Labour candidate Margaret Greenwood won the Wirral West seat, and McVey resigned from his position.
