Famke Janssen Biography and Career:

Famke Beumer Janssen is a well-known Dutch actress born November 5, 1964. She is most known for her roles as Xenia Onatopp in the 1995 film GoldenEye, Jean Grey/Phoenix in the series X-Men (2000–2014), and Lenore Mills in the film trilogy Taken (2008–2014). In 2008, the United Nations honored her by bestowing her the Goodwill Ambassador for Integrity title. In 2011, she launched her filmmaking career with the film Bringing Up Bobby.

She is also well known for her performances in the original series Hemlock Grove (which aired on Netflix from 2013 to 2015), Nip/Tuck (which aired on FX from 2003 to 2010, and How to Get Away with Murder (which aired on ABC from 2014 to 2020). Janssen had a starring role in the criminal drama The Blacklist: Redemption, which aired on NBC in 2017. Janssen is trilingual in Dutch, English, and French in addition to her home tongue of Dutch. She was taught German, but she still needed to maintain her knowledge of the language after she had completed her high school education.

Janssen spent one-year studying economics at the University of Amsterdam, a decision she would later call “the stupidest idea I ever had.”She attended the School of General Studies at Columbia University in the early 1990s to further her education in literature and creative writing. The year 1984 marked the beginning of Janssen’s professional career as a fashion model, and she relocated to the United States to launch her career.

After signing a contract with Elite Model Management, she became a model for Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Chanel, and Victoria’s Secret. In 1988, she was featured in a commercial for the fragrance Exclamation, which Coty, Inc. manufactured. Her appearance has been likened to 1940s screen sirens such as Hedy Lamarr following her retirement from the modeling industry in the early 1990s.

Janssen appeared in recurring or recurring guest parts on several television shows, including Star Trek: The Next Generation, where she played the empathic metamorph Kamala in the episode “The Perfect Mate” 1992. She played the character opposite Patrick Stewart, with whom she subsequently co-starred in the X-Men film series. In the same year, Janssen was presented with the opportunity to play Jadzia Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; however, she declined the part to focus on her career in movies.

Her debut performance in a film was opposite Jeff Goldblum in the criminal thriller Fathers & Sons, released in 1992. Janssen appeared as the villainous femme fatale Xenia Onatopp in Pierce Brosnan’s first James Bond film, GoldenEye, released in 1995. She had a role in the movie Lord of Illusions, which also starred Scott Bakula. After her portrayal as a Bond girl, Famke Janssen started looking for supporting parts that were more interesting to avoid being typecast. She appeared in films such as City of Industry, Celebrity, The Gingerbread Man, and Monument Avenue, directed by John Irvin, Woody Allen, and Ted Demme, respectively.

Her co-star in Monument Ave., Denis Leary, was amazed by how effortlessly she blended in with the crowd; he didn’t even recognize her initially since she was already in character. She appeared in The Faculty, Rounders, Deep Rising, and House on Haunted Hill throughout the latter half of the 1990s.In the film X-Men, produced by 20th Century Fox in 2000, Janssen portrayed the superhero Dr. Jean Grey. She then played the same character in the sequel to the film X2, which was released in 2003. In that film, her character indicates that her abilities are growing, but the movie ends with her being killed.

In X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Janssen reprises her role as Jean, whose death in X2 unleashed her more sinister alternative personality, Phoenix. She was awarded the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in that role. In the film The Wolverine (2013), she reprised her role as Jean Grey as a hallucination of Wolverine. This was followed by a short cameo appearance in the film X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). Janssen was cast as the villainous Serleena in Men in Black II in 2002, but she was forced to withdraw from the production because a family member passed away. Lara Flynn Boyle took up the part from Janssen.

Janssen was nominated for the Hollywood Life Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award because of her performance as the seductive and manipulative life coach Ava Moore in the second season of the television series Nip/Tuck. This role helped Janssen gain the award. She appeared in the last two episodes of the series in her role as the protagonist. At the Hamptons International Film Festival in 2007, she was honored with the Special Recognition Best Actress prize for her performance in the film Turn the River, for which she received the award.

The year after that, she had a role in the film Taken, which Luc Besson directed. Janssen continued to work in television, playing in TV pilots for NBC’s police drama Winters and Showtime’s The Farm, a spinoff of The L Word set in a women’s jail. Both of these shows were set in different environments. Both pilots were turned down for airing by their respective networks. Janssen provided the Studio Tram Tour at Disney’s theme parks with the Dutch language narration.

Janssen debuted as a filmmaker with the drama Bringing Up Bobby, which she directed in 2011. She is responsible for writing the script for the movie, which features Marcia Cross, Milla Jovovich, and Bill Pullman. Both Taken 2 (2012) and Taken 3 (2014) included her in the character of Lenore Mills, which she had previously played. In the 2013 film Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, she played the role of Muriel, the primary antagonist.
