Geena Davis Biography and Career:

Geena Davis, whose full name is Virginia Elizabeth Davis, was an American actress who was good at humorous roles and added charm and likability to quirky characters. Geena Davis was born on January 21, 1956, in Wareham, Massachusetts, in the United States. Davis attended New England College for two years before transferring to the College of Fine Arts at Boston University, from which she graduated in 1979.

Davis also spent time performing in summer stock productions during her academic career. After that, she uprooted her life and relocated to New York City, where she initially found work as a waitress in several restaurants. She signed with the Zoli modeling agency and began her career as a lingerie model. Her first role in a feature film was a small one in the comedic classic Tootsie (1982).

In the short-lived television comedy series Buffalo Bill from 1983–1984, Davis was cast in the role of a research assistant for the irascible talk show presenter portrayed by Dabney Coleman. She went on to have guest roles in various television programs, including a recurrent part between 1984 and 1986 as an unskilled housekeeper in the sitcom Family Ties, and she portrayed the title character in the unsuccessful sitcom Sara.

She also went on to play numerous roles in movies (1985). Before her breakthrough appearance opposite Goldblum in David Cronenberg’s horror-thriller The Fly, Davis played in the critically panned films Fletch and Transylvania 6-5000, both of which bombed at the box office in 1985. All three of these roles were released in the same year. Davis won the Academy Award for best-supporting actress for her work in the latter film, which garnered her the award.

Later in her career, she appeared alongside Bill Murray in the heist comedy Quick Change (1990). Davis was arguably most remembered for her performance as the emotionally tortured housewife Thelma in the feminist road movie Thelma & Louise. In this role, Davis found satisfaction in acting on her own behalf, which brought her widespread recognition (1991; with Susan Sarandon).

Due to the quality of their performances, both Davis and Sarandon were considered for a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Davis also gained acclaim for her performance in A League of Their Own, directed by Penny Marshall, in which she portrayed catcher Dottie Hinson (1992). The films that Davis made after that were, on the whole, less influential.
