Ja Morant Biography and Career:

Demetrius Jamel “Ja” Morant is an American professional basketball player playing for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Morant was born on August 10, 1999, in the United States. In 2019, he was a unanimous first-team All-American for the NCAA basketball team Murray State Racers, where he played for four years and earned the honor as a sophomore. Despite being selected All-Region Most Valuable Player three times and garnering All-State accolades while attending Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, Morant was very sparingly sought by NCAA Division I teams and was unranked by recruiting agencies. This was the case despite Morant’s accomplishments.

Despite this, he had a significant influence right away at Murray State University, and he was honored with a spot on the first team of all-conference players for the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) while he was just a freshman. His sophomore year was his breakthrough year, earning him the OVC Player of the Year award and the lead in assists for the NCAA. Morant made NCAA history during his sophomore year by being the first player in the organization’s annals to finish a season averaging at least 20 points and ten assists per game.

The Grizzlies used the second overall choice in the 2019 NBA draft to choose Morant, and he went on to win the Rookie of the Year award in his first season in the league in 2020. In 2022, he was given the honor of starting in his first NBA All-Star Game selection. Morant finished the year with a bang, taking home the trophy for Most Improved Player in the NBA and earning a spot on the All-NBA Team for the first time in his career.

Morant was coached by his father, Tee Morant, in the family home’s backyard. Tee Morant instructed his son on step-back jump shots and provided him with tractor tires to practice leaping with a gentle landing. When he was younger, he was often pitted against bigger adversaries, and he would tell his mother, “I’m not worried about the big kids.”Morant was a member of the South Carolina Hornets, a modest club team with its headquarters in Columbia, South Carolina when they participated in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) circuit.

Zion Williamson, who became one of the best players in his class, was on his squad for one season. During that time, he played. Morant received his high school education at Crestwood in Sumter, South Carolina. In his first three years with the squad, he went from 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 m) tall to 6 feet 0 inches (1.83 m) tall. Morant finished his career as the School’s all-time top scorer with 1,679 points and set a job-best with 47 points against Sumter’s best School. Morant departed the School.

After finishing his career at Crestwood with averages of 27 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists per game, he was named to the South Carolina Class 3A All-State Team in his last two seasons there. Morant also graduated from high school, having been named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the All-Region three times. He learned how to dunk when he was a senior in high school. The recruiting services ESPN, 247Sports, and Rivals did not rank Morant in their respective rankings. The University of South Carolina was the only high-major School to give him a spot in the NCAA Division I.

In July of 2016, when assistant coach James Kane was attending a camp in the hopes of seeing a player who would be joining his squad, Murray State of the Ohio Valley Conference, a mid-major school, found out about him by complete accident. Kane came upon Morant playing a three-on-three game in an auxiliary gym as he was seeking food. Impressed by what he saw, Kane called the head coach, Matt McMahon, who quickly gave Morant a scholarship.

Morant decided to play college basketball at Murray State on September 3, 2016, while having dinner at McMahon’s home. His father said, “Every parent wants their child to play at a big-time program, but I realized, don’t go to where you want to be; go to where they want you.”Wofford, South Carolina State University, Duquesne, and Maryland Eastern Shore were among the other Division I schools that sent an offer to him.

Morant debuted for Murray State University on November 10, 2017, against Brescia University of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In his first game, he scored 7 points and led the team with 11 assists. Murray State won the game 118–61. In a game against Saint Louis that ended 69–55, he recorded his first double-double by scoring 10 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out six assists on December 12, 2017.

On December 28, he recorded his first triple-double by scoring 11 points, grabbing ten rebounds, and dishing out 14 assists in a victory against Eastern Illinois. The score of the game was 80–52. It was the second triple-double in the School’s history, with Isacc Miles achieving the first in 1984. It was also a record for the most assists in a game played at the CFSB Center, surpassing the previous record of 12 set by Aubrey Reese in 1999 versus Alabama State.

Morant also has the third-most assists by a Murray State player in a single game throughout his career. The game he played against Southeast Missouri State on February 1, 2018, was the one in which he scored a season-high 23 points. Morant was recognized as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team and named to the first team All-OVC along with colleagues Jonathan Stark and Terrell Miller. Morant finished the season averaging 12.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game.
