Demetrius Jamel “Ja” Morant is an American professional basketball player playing for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Morant was born on August 10, 1999, in the United States. In 2019, he was a unanimous first-team All-American for the NCAA basketball team Murray State Racers, where he played for four years and earned the honor as a sophomore. Despite being selected All-Region Most Valuable Player three times and garnering All-State accolades while attending Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, Morant was very sparingly sought by NCAA Division I teams and was unranked by recruiting agencies. It was also a record for the most assists in a game played at the CFSB Center, surpassing the previous record of 12 set by Aubrey Reese in 1999 versus Alabama State.

Morant also has the third-most assists by a Murray State player in a single game throughout his career. The game he played against Southeast Missouri State on February 1, 2018, was the one in which he scored a season-high 23 points. Morant was recognized as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team and named to the first team All-OVC along with colleagues Jonathan Stark and Terrell Miller.
