Jacqueline Winspear Biography and Career:
The English county of Kent is where Jacqueline Winspear spent her childhood and where she was born. After completing her post-secondary education at the Institute of Education at the University of London, Jacqueline went on to work in the fields of academic publishing, higher education, and marketing communications in the United Kingdom.
She moved to the United States in 1990, and while she was working in business and as a personal/professional coach, Jacqueline began pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a writer. As a result of her efforts, she is now a regular contributor to journals covering international education and travel, and she has had articles published in the Washington Post.
Jacqueline has recorded her articles and had them broadcast on KQED radio in San Francisco. Her short tales have been published in periodicals all over the world. Her articles and short stories have been included in a number of collections of that genre’s work.
At The Battle of the Somme in 1916, Jacqueline’s grandfather was severely wounded and shell-shocked. It was because she understood the extent of his suffering that Jacqueline, even when she was a child, became intensely interested in the “war to end all wars” and its aftermath. Her fascination with this period of history only became stronger as she got older, to the point where, despite the fact that she never intended to write a “war” novel, it shouldn’t have been a surprise that it was used as the setting for Maisie Dobbs and the other novels in the series.
The unforgettable and captivating Maisie Dobbs persona is very much a product of the time in which she was born. She came of age in an era in which women did the work traditionally performed by males and asserted a level of independence that was difficult to give up. It was a period when a large number of women did not get married for the simple reason that a generation of men had gone to war and did not return home.
For a writer of fiction, a moment of tremendous emotions may give sufficient fuel for a gripping novel, particularly one featuring criminal activities and concerns of guilt and innocence. Such significant societal upheaval makes it possible for the bizarre and the exceptional to arise. After all, it’s been stated that The Great War deprived a whole generation of their childhood innocence. According to Ms. Winspear, “the mystery genre gives a tremendous vehicle for investigating such a moment,” which is why she chose to write about it.
These include the New York Times bestsellers The American Agent, To Die But Once, In This Grave Hour, Journey to Munich, A Dangerous Place, Leaving Everything Most Loved, and Elegy. In addition, she has written four other novels that have been named National Bestselling Her stand-alone book, The Care and Management of Lies, was not only a bestseller on the New York Times and the National Bestseller Lists, but it was also a nominee for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.
Two of Jacqueline’s non-fiction books have been published: the first, What Would Maisie Do? (2018), is based on the series, and the second is a memoir titled This Time Next Year We’ll Be Laughing (2020). In addition, her most recent published essays include Writing About War and Women On Fire.
For the former, she conducted interviews with authors such as Kate Atkinson, Rhys Bowen, Jeff Shaara, and Adam Hochschild for the purpose of examining the effect that writing about war has on the author, while the latter examines the role that women play in the management of wildfires.
Her article on the craft of creating historical mysteries is going to be included in the forthcoming anthology/handbook from Mystery Writers of America called How to Write a Mystery, which is going to be edited by Lee Child (April 2021)
Henry Holt selected “Pardonable Lies,” Jacqueline’s third book, to be their main fiction title when it was released in September of 2005. It went on to become the first recipient of the Macavity and Sue Feder Award for the Best Historical Mystery. After that, she published her fourth novel, which was titled Messenger of Truth. In 2006, it was considered for an Agatha Award nomination for Best Novel. Each of the first four Maisie Dobbs novels was able to achieve this award on its own!
Film and General Productions in the UK purchased the rights to make a television series based on the Maisie Dobbs novels; but, as of the time of this writing, it does not seem that a series is in the process of being developed.
