Additionally, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of Gulf Air. Ivanhoe Grammar School was where James Hogan received his education and graduated in 1975. He was born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria.

During the year 1975, James Hogan started his professional life by working for Ansett Airlines as a regular employee, including as a check-in assistant. He went on to hold prominent positions at Hertz Corporation, where he was responsible for directing the marketing, sales, and operations divisions, among other responsibilities. As Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, he became a member of the executive management committee in London in the year 1995.

After assuming the position of service director for British Midland International (BMI) in 1997, Hogan left the company in 1998 to become the global sales director for the Granada Group. During his tenure with the Granada Group, he served on the board of Forte Hotels. In 1999, he went back to BMI to take on the role of chief operating officer. In this role, he was accountable for flight and ground operations, sales and marketing, commercial, cargo, engineering, and handling service firms. Additionally, he was a member of the board of directors.

Hogan relocated back to his home country of Australia in the year 2001. Upon his return, he was given the position of chief executive officer of the Tesna consortium, which was established to purchase Ansett Airlines from its current management. He began his tenure as CEO of Gulf Air in May of 2002. As a reaction to a precipitous decline in profitability and a growing amount of debt, he initiated a program of restructuring and turnaround in December 2002.

During the year 2004, Gulf Air reported a profit of four million dollars before going back to losing money. In July 2006, he submitted his resignation, and he departed Gulf Air at the end of September of the same year. His appointment as president and chief executive officer of Etihad Airways, the United Arab Emirates’ flag carrier headquartered in Abu Dhabi, took place on September 10, 2006. He managed Etihad’s fast expansion, which resulted in the airline servicing 86 passenger and cargo destinations throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Additionally, he was responsible for the operation of a fleet of 120 aircraft.

It was by the strategic plan targets that Etihad had declared in 2006 that the company recorded its first full-year net profit in 2011, which was $14 million. The airline announced that it had made a net profit of $42 million for the year 2012 in February of 2013. Through the purchase of minority holdings in other airlines, he managed Etihad’s plan to develop a network. Specifically, he was responsible for Air Berlin (29.21%), Air Seychelles (40%), Aer Lingus (2.987%), Virgin Australia (24.9%), Air Serbia (49%), Darwin Airline (33%), Jet Airways (24%), and Alitalia (49%).

Etihad said on April 27, 2016, that it earned a net profit of 103 million US dollars for the year 2015. Etihad Aviation Group, the parent business of the airline, appointed Hogan to the position of chief executive officer in May, which resulted in a reorganization of the management structure. Hogan is now the CEO of the airline, and Peter Baumgartner, who was formerly the Chief Commercial Officer of the airline, has taken over that role.

According to a rumor that was published in Handelsblatt Global in December, Hogan was likely to be fired as a result of a “failed spree of acquisitions in Europe. The Board of Directors of Etihad Aviation Group announced on January 24, 2017, that David Hogan, along with James Rigney, the Group’s Chief Financial Officer, will be resigning “in the second half of 2017.”

During a time when the company was experiencing increasing losses as a result of its investments in Air Berlin and Alitalia, Peter Baumgartner, who had previously served as the CEO of the airline, replaced him as the interim CEO of the group. on May 2, 2017, Alitalia filed a bankruptcy petition. At the end of the month, Hogan and Rigney departed from Etihad. Etihad said on July 27 that it had incurred a loss of $1.87 billion for the year 2016.

Following Etihad’s withdrawal of its financial backing, Air Berlin ultimately decided to file for bankruptcy on August 15th. In 2017, Etihad recorded a financial loss of $1.52 billion in United States dollars. In addition to being a member of the Audit Committee of the Gallaher Group and a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, Hogan has also served as a non-executive director of the company while it was in operation.
