James Remar Biography and Career:

James William Remar is a well-known American actor born on the 31st of December in 1953. Throughout his forty-year career, he has appeared in a wide variety of roles, the most notable of which are Ajax in The Warriors (1979), Albert Ganz in 48 Hours (1982), Dutch Schultz in The Cotton Club (1984), Jack Duff in Miracle on 34th Street (1994), Richard Wright in Sex and the City (2001–2004), and Harry Morgan, the father of the title character, in Dexter (2006–2013).

Since 2009, he has been providing his voice for advertisements for Lexus premium automobiles. The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City was where Remar received his training in acting lessons. Frank Gordon in Gotham from 2016 to 2019, Peter Gambi in Black Lightning from 2018 to 2021, and Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson in Oppenheimer in 2023 are some of the more recent roles that Remar has played.

Although Remar attended what he referred to as “kind of an alternative school” for a year after dropping out of high school at the age of 15, he did not continue his post-secondary education. After that, he had a short stint as a member of a rock band when he was touring around the United States. After a while, he moved back to his hometown and resumed his high school education, but he ultimately decided not to continue his education after high school.

Remar has said that he decided to pursue a career in acting when he was twenty years old. Following his dismissal as a roofer, he recalled a prior job in which he performed at a summer camp. He stated that he would allow himself three years to try his hand at an acting profession before trying anything else. With the help of the state of Florida, Remar was able to get a part in the production of Cross and Sword.

After that, he chose to further his education at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre; however, after completing his first year there, he was not invited to return, which he described as “a devastating experience.” As Remar continued his hunt for other acting opportunities, he ultimately found himself in the role of Kenickie in a touring production of Grease. In addition, he acted at the Ensemble Studio Theatre before making his debut in the film On the Yard.

Remar has spent most of his career in the film industry portraying antagonistic roles. In the cult classic film The Warriors (1979), he played the role of Ajax, a vicious gang member, and in the critically acclaimed film 48 Hours (1982), he played Albert Ganz, a psychopath who committed murder. John Walter Hill was the director of both of these pictures. In the 1984 film The Cotton Club, Remar also portrayed the role of Dutch Schultz, a real-life criminal named Dutch Schultz. On the other hand, Remar played the character of the young Cheyenne Windwalker in the film Windwalker (1980), in which he also uttered his lines in the Cheyenne language. This is a significant departure from his previous performances.

In the film Cruising (1980), he also played the role of a homosexual guy. In the same year, Remar appeared in a cameo role in the 1980 western film The Long Riders, playing a character involved in a bar brawl with David Carradine. It was soon after the beginning of production that Michael Biehn took over the role of Corporal Hicks in the science-fiction/horror picture Aliens (1986). He had previously starred in the film Quiet Cool (1986), and he was also considered for the role of this character.

When the Marines enter the processing station, and the camera tilts down from the alien nest, at least one piece of footage featuring Remar is used in the film’s final version. However, Remar is not seen in close-up during this particular scene. As the Marines initially enter the facility on LV-426, he is likewise recorded from the back. Additionally, as “Hicks” approaches the cocooned lady, he is filmed from the back once more, making it impossible for the spectator to distinguish between Remar and Michael Biehn.

In the 1996 film The Phantom, he portrayed the role of Quill, one of the primary antagonists. He featured in Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997), the sequel to the film Mortal Kombat (1995), to take over the role of Raiden from Christopher Lambert. In 1994, he performed a supporting part in the movie “Renaissance Man.” In 1997, he appeared in Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Following this, he played a part in the science fiction film Robo Warriors (1996), released on direct-to-video.

Other movies that he has appeared in include Psycho (1998), in which he played the role of the patrolman; Drugstore Cowboy (1989); Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990); Wedlock (1991); Boys on the Side (1995); The Quest (1996); Rites of Passage (1999); Hellraiser: Inferno (2000); 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003); Fear X (2003); Blade: Trinity (2004); and The Girl Next Door (2004). He appeared in the prologue of Pineapple Express (2008), playing the part of General Bratt for a limited period.
