Jason Fung Biography and Career:

I’ve worked hard over the years to earn the reputation of being the person who can bust fitness myths and nonsense. In spite of appearances to the contrary, I do not actively seek out individuals to ridicule or criticize. I don’t find it to be very enjoyable. In most cases, the return on investment consists of quite a few venomous remarks and expressions of hatred. Having said that, I believe that it is of the utmost importance to correct any misinformation that is spread since, regardless of how altruistic the intentions may be, it will always bring damage to others. When I refer to “misinformation,” what I want to refer to is not just a divergence of opinion. I’m not talking about subjective variances in taste that can be explained by a few well selected research.

When I refer to “misinformation,” I’m referring to information that, after being packaged and marketed as reality, directly contradicts the preponderance of the evidence that’s been accumulated. As I’ve already said, I don’t go out of my way to find things like this. But as a result of my popularity, I end up being sent a lot of stuff related to fitness, and people ask for my judgement on both the information itself and any claims that are made about it. Because this is the fitness sector, the majority of the time the stuff that is produced turns out to be crap. And the market is rife with disgusting, repulsive charlatans who are happy to make any claim so long as it earns them money and increases their following. Dr. Jason Fung has been someone who has frequently come to my attention. Because of the mountain of erroneous, illogical, and generally stupid statements that he has made, I have felt compelled to try to dispute him as well as create a variety of blogs and videos to refute the assertions that he has made. As of right now, all efforts to engage him in a formal discussion have been fruitless since he has refused to recognize their existence. Who exactly is this Dr. Jason Fung, anyway? His website describes him as “a world-leading authority in intermittent fasting and low carb, particularly for treating persons with Type 2 Diabetes.” He is a Canadian nephrologist, which means he is a doctor who specializes in the kidneys. In the years after the publication of The Obesity Code, he has also penned The Diabetes Code and The Cancer Code, all of which contributed to his rise to fame. The purpose of this essay is not to disprove the claims made in such books.

Even though the books did quite well in the marketplace, academics and industry professionals have not shown much enthusiasm for them.  In addition to the fact that he makes false assertions, Dr. Fung’s unwillingness to engage in argument is frustrating to me. The only piece of proof I was able to discover of him arguing another person was on an episode of a television programme called The Doctors. On that episode, he had a brief discussion with Dr. Joel Kahn, a vegan who happens to be on the other side of the argument as Dr. Fung. They are not founded on any evidence, and it is only a coincidence that they recommend diets that are diametrically opposed to one another. Aside from that, I was unable to locate any instance in which he engaged in a discussion with a nutritionist. As was previously said, none of my countless requests for dialogue have been responded to.
If Dr. Fung did not also attempt to have individuals fired from their jobs because they disagree with him.

My conversations with a few individuals have led me to believe that Dr. Fung made an effort to have them dismissed from their positions or expelled from graduate school; nonetheless, these individuals have shown a desire to maintain their anonymity. On the other hand, there is one extremely public instance in which Dr. Fung made an effort to have someone dismissed from their employment. At a meeting in 2016, Dr. Fung made disparaging comments about the weight of two obesity experts who themselves were overweight. This caused an obesity expert by the name of Dr. Yoni Friedhoff to respond to Dr. Fung on Twitter and explain why the latter’s fat-shaming comments were incorrect. As a direct reaction, Dr. Fung contacted Dr. Friedhoff’s department and filed a formal complaint against him in an effort to oust him from his position. To our great relief, Dr. Friedhoff was not only able to keep his job, but he was also given a promotion.

This type of action frustrates me since Dr. Fung chose not to challenge the validity of Dr. Friedhoff’s argument on the basis of its content but rather sought to destroy his life. In addition to this, he made an effort to have another physician dismissed from his position for having the audacity to challenge Dr. Fung’s cancer figures .In addition to that, there have been instances when I’ve struggled with Dr. Fung’s marketing. The answer is yes; intermittent fasting and low-carb diets are both effective strategies for treating type 2 diabetes and lowering body fat. It seems to have green tea, licorice, ginger, citrus peel, and mint as its constituent parts. There is very little to no proof to back the claims that are made by this tea; nonetheless, I was unable to locate the dose information for these substances. Although it’s possible that the firm itself is making these claims, the fact remains that Dr. Fung’s name is prominently displayed on the packaging for the medication.
