João Gonzalez Biography and Career:

João Gonzalez, a Portuguese film director and animator, was born on February 11, 1996. He now resides in Porto. Most of his fame stems from writing and directing the short film Ice Merchants, which also won several awards and had its world debut at the Cannes Film Festival in the same year. With its nomination for an Academy Award on January 24, 2023, “Ice Merchants” made history by being the first Portuguese production ever to earn such a nomination.

Gonzalez received his Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Arts from ESMAD in Porto, where he graduated in 2017 with a concentration in animation theory and practice. As a scholarship recipient from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, he pursued a Master of Arts degree at the Royal College of Art in the United Kingdom, from which he graduated in 2020. Beginning in January 2023, he took a position with the COLA animation collective in Porto, where he worked as a director and animator.

The creative style is reminiscent of a hand-drawn pencil on paper appearance, with powerful shadows and a restricted color palette that contrasts the warm hues of humanity with the cold, harsh colors of the outside world. This is accomplished via the use of computer animation rather than traditional methods. Ice Merchants” is the third film that João Gonzalez has directed. In Portugal, Bruno Caetano was responsible for producing it for Cola Animation. France and the United Kingdom were also involved in the production process.

“Ice Merchants” is the first Portuguese film to be nominated for an Academy Award, according to Gonzalez, who said in an interview with the Lusa news agency that he never believed it would happen.
