John Illsley Biography and Career:

John Edward Illsley is an English musician born on June 24, 1949. He is most known for his role as the bass guitarist for the rock band Dire Straits. As a result, he is the recipient of many Grammy Awards, BRIT Awards, and a Heritage Award. Illsley was one of the founder members of Dire Straits, along with the Knopfler brothers on guitar and Picked Withers on drums. He and the other founding members contributed to forming the band’s signature sound.

Illsley and Mark Knopfler are the only two members of the band who have remained consistent over its entire existence. As a member of Dire Straits, Illsley was honored with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Illsley has produced two albums, including Mark Knopfler as a guest performer. He has also assisted Mark with many personal projects and charitable organizations. He recorded two additional albums, all heavily inspired by the Celtic band Cunla.

Illsley’s recollections from her youth include going on hunts with her friends to find sticklebacks in the River Jordan at Little Bowden, located close to Market Harborough. Before beginning his career as a management trainee for a lumber company, Illsley received his education at Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire and a Further Education College close to Kettering in Northamptonshire. After that, he attended Goldsmiths College, University of London, to get a degree in Sociology, and he and his fiancée founded a record store.

David Knopfler, interested in forming a band, discussed the idea with his roommate. Illsley was already a bass guitarist with the same passion for the instrument. The four musicians, David’s brother Mark on lead guitar and vocals, David on rhythm guitar, Illsley on bass, and Pick Withers, a friend, on drums, got together to establish a band. Mark played lead guitar and sang, while David played rhythm guitar.

Eventually came to be known as Dire Straits, a moniker that some say was inspired by the fact that the band members had quit their day jobs and were financially in “dire straits” by the time their band became successful. On his website, however, David Knopfler refutes this: “The notion that the band was literally in dire straits is largely retrospective myth-making and not factually supportable.”

Before receiving a substantial advance from Polygram, we all worked regular jobs. On the other hand, Illsley said, “We were living on next to nothing and weren’t even able to pay the gas bill.” He said the band “wasn’t called Dire Straits for nothing” (DS for short). Illsley also supplied backing vocals, along with David Knopfler, and both of them harmonized to Mark’s lead vocals and guitar in concert and on the band’s first two studio albums, Dire Straits and Communiqué. In addition to playing bass on all of the Dire Straits recordings, Illsley also contributed backup vocals.

Tensions erupted between David Knopfler and his older brother Mark inside the band at a time when most significant labels wanted bands to write and record one to two albums per year in addition to touring to promote them. This occurred when most powerful brands expected bands to compose and record one to two yearly albums. Mark had written the majority of the band’s songs, served as the band’s leader, and quickly developed into a virtuoso guitarist in a short amount of time.

David Knopfler left the band because of creative differences with his brother, who had assumed the role of “de facto” leader after nearly non-stop recording, touring, and publicity had taken its toll on the band during the recording sessions for their third project, Making Movies. The stress that had built up between the Knopfler brothers after nearly non-stop recording, touring, and publicity had taken its toll on the band.

After David left the band, they found a replacement in Hal Lindes, who remained with them for five years. In 1980, Alan Clark became a member of the band, and he brought keyboards with him. Even though the roster was consta shifting, Illsley maintained his position as bassist and continued to provide harmony and backup vocals with the band’s other members.

Illsley and Mark Knopfler were the only original members of Dire Straits to stay in the lineup all the way through from 1977 until the group’s disintegration in 1995. This lasted from the time the band was formed in 1977 until 1995. In October 2008, Illsley made many fruitless attempts to get Mark Knopfler to reopen the group. In the memoir My Life in Dire Straits, which will be published in November 2021, Illsley states unequivocally that Mark Knopfler has no desire to reform Dire Straits.

Illsley recorded two solo albums of his own before the dissolution of Dire Straits. These albums were titled Never Told a Soul (1984) and Glass (1988). Knopfler was responsible for some of the guitar sections on both albums. Illsley first became aware of the Irish Celtic rock band Cunla in March 2005 at a bar in Leicestershire.

He hadn’t performed on stage with the band since 1993, but he did so for the very first time tonight and played a handful of songs by Dire Straits. After that, Cunla performed at Illsley’s barbecue in Hampshire over the summer. After then, he made many public appearances with them, the most notable of which occurred on September 23, 2006, at the Cathedrale d’Image in Les Baux de Provence, France.

This performance was captured on recording and then made available to the public in the form of an album in the year 2007. While performing with Illsley, they performed a handful of songs by Dire Straits, but they did it in an Irish manner. Johnny Owens played the traditional Irish violin instead of the synths and brass sections. In addition, they have a substantial quantity of their content, most of which was written by Greg Pearle.
