Johnny Knoxville Biography and Career:

Johnny Knoxville, whose real name is Philip John Clapp, is a famous American comedian and stunt performer. Although he has been in many movies, he is most well-known as the co-creator and principal star of the Jackass series and its sequel films, which aired on MTV. Philip John Clapp, whose nickname was “Knoxville,” was born in that city. His elder sisters are eight and ten years his senior. Phil Clapp Sr. had a tire business filled with eccentrics who served as surrogate uncles to the children of Knoxville.

His father was notorious for playing practical jokes on his staff, including giving them ex-lax milkshakes without their knowledge, sending them bogus letters from the V.D. clinic, and staging gunfights at Christmas. Pranks like striking his father’s workers in the crotch were encouraged in young Knoxville. He attributes his penchant for mischief to his father and their chaotic childhood.

Knoxville has had asthma for much of his life, but that hasn’t stopped him from pursuing a career in dangerous acts. At eight, he almost died when he had the flu, pneumonia, and bronchitis simultaneously. He had a rough upbringing and developed a dependency on hospital visits and medication from a young age. As a youngster, he would bite his fingernails and toenails down to the quick because of his obsessive-compulsive disorder.

He found tremendous motivation from Evel Knievel and country music legends Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. Knoxville says that his cousin, country singer/songwriter Roger Alan Wade, gave him the book On the Road by Jack Kerouac inspired him to pursue acting. After finishing high school in Knoxville, Tennessee, at South-Young, he headed west to pursue a career in acting.

On May 15, 1995, he wed Melanie Lynn Cates, a fashion designer. Since the “big break” Knoxville had been hoping for hadn’t come his way, Melanie’s pregnancy that year motivated him to get a real job and start bringing in some cash. His eldest child, Madison Clapp, entered the world in 1996. He used the initiative to forge his path by penning articles and submitting them as pitches to periodicals before landing on Jackass. Knoxville and Melanie, his wife of 12 years, filed for divorce on February 1, 2007. In July 2006, they separated soon after.

Knoxville and his fiancée, Naomi Nelson, announced their pregnancy on August 18, 2009. In Los Angeles that December, Nelson gave birth to her baby, Rocko Clapp. Nelson and Knoxville tied the knot on September 24, 2010. In Los Angeles, Nelson gave birth to her daughter in October 2011, and she named her Arlo Clapp. Knoxville reportedly filed for divorce from his wife on June 17, 2022, after a discreet separation the previous year.

Knoxville’s acting career has humble beginnings in small roles like advertisements and cameos. After failing to get his dream job, he started writing and submitting articles to periodicals. He was awarded a full scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts but left after two weeks. Big Brother, the skateboarding magazine run by Jeff Tremaine, took an interest in his plan to put self-defense tools through their paces, and he was videotaped doing the feats for the magazine’s Number Two video.

Many of Jackass’s concepts came from Knoxville, also regarded as the show’s unofficial boss. Jeff Tremaine, who directed the show’s pilot and edited clips from Big Brother and Bam Margera’s CKY films, is responsible for production. Tremaine’s buddy and film director Spike Jonze helped the group pitch a series to multiple networks. Negotiations with MTV resulted in the creation of Jackass. In addition to his co-stars Steve-O and Chris Pontius, Jackass director Jeff Tremaine, and producer Dimitry Elyashkevich he also participated in the Gumball 3000.

Jackass creator Johnny Knoxville and his crew were offered a regular spot on Saturday Night Live to do similar antics, but they declined (Knoxville did headline SNL in 2005). MTV and Comedy Central fought for the show’s rights throughout the bidding process. Ultimately, MTV prevailed, and Jackass was founded as a result. Knoxville has had sixteen concussions over his career as a stunt performer, and his doctor has informed him he cannot take any more strikes to the head. He has stated his desire to serve as a producer on future Jackass films.

Early on, he had supporting parts in advertisements for brands including Dentyne Ice Gum (1995), Mountain Dew (1999), Taco Bell (2005), and Coors Light (2005), in which he co-starred with John Wayne. He had a small role in the 2000 film Coyote Ugly and played the title role in the 2003 film Life Without Dick, starring opposite Sarah Jessica Parker.

In Big Trouble and Deuces Wild, he had small parts as the antagonist, and in Men in Black II, he was a two-headed extraterrestrial. His first lead part was in Grand Theft Parsons, and he also appeared in the 2004 remake of Walking Tall as a supporting actor for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He also appeared in Lords of Dogtown and, most memorably, in Jay Chandrasekhar’s adaption of The Dukes of Hazzard, where he played Luke Duke alongside Seann William Scott and Jessica Simpson.

In The Ringer, he portrayed a contentious part as a non-disabled office worker who falsely attended the Special Olympics and acted as the title character in Quentin Tarantino’s Daltry Calhoun. Among the films he appeared in are Father of Invention, Nature Calls, Fun Size, and The Last Stand, in which he co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Most notably, he voiced Leonardo in the 2014 live-action rendition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and appeared in Movie 43, Small Apartments with Matt Lucas and Billy Crystal. Mark Caso took over for him as Leonardo in the 2016 live-action TMNT sequel. Knoxville says he was never told about the change but hopes for the best anyway. In addition, he co-starred in and collaborated alongside John Waters’ A Dirty Shame. also made appearances as a voice actor on popular cartoon shows, including “King of the Hill,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” and “Family Guy.” Knoxville has a cameo in the pilot episode of Unhitched.
