That’s Another Story, her autobiography, was published the year it was named, in 2008. When Walters was born, the primary maternity facility for Smethwick, which was located in Staffordshire at the time, was St. Chad’s Hospital in Edgbaston, located in Birmingham. Her mother, Mary Bridget (née O’Brien), was a Roman Catholic postal clerk born in County Mayo, Ireland. Her father, Thomas Walters, was an English builder and decorator who resided at 69 Bishopton Road in the Bearwood neighborhood of Smethwick. They were neighbors of Lightwoods Park.

Walters had her early schooling at a Catholic school and then continued her education at Holly Lodge Grammar School for Girls, located on Holly Lane in Smethwick. Walters is the youngest of five children and the third to survive birth. In 2014, she said that “it was bliss when I attended an average grammar school,” even though she was asked to leave after her lower sixth due to her “high jinks.” During an interview with Alison Oddey, Walters discussed her early educational experiences: “Since I had little interest in pursuing a career in academia, proposed that I work in either teaching or nursing. I was told to drop out of school, so I figured it was best to comply with the request.”

At the age of 15, she started working in the insurance industry. She began her nursing career as a student at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham when she was 18 years old. During her training there, she spent 18 months working in the ophthalmology, trauma, and coronary care wards. After deciding to quit nursing, Walters enrolled at Manchester Polytechnic to study English and acting (now Manchester Metropolitan University). During the middle of the 1970s, she was employed by the Everyman Theatre Company in Liverpool. During that time, she worked with several well-known actors, including Bill Nighy, Pete Postlethwaite, Jonathan Pryce, Willy Russell, and Alan Bleasdale.

In the beginning, Walters became known for her role as the comedienne Victoria Wood’s occasional girlfriend. Walters and Wood had briefly met in Manchester. After collaborating for the first time in 1978 on the theatrical revue “In at the Death,” they worked together on the television version of Wood’s play Talent. After that, in 1982, they started starring in their television series for Granada called Wood and Walters. They proceeded to give many performances together over several years. One of the most well-known parts that Walters has ever played was Mrs. Overall in Victoria Wood’s parodic soap opera, Acorn Antiques, which was included in the follow-up program that won a BAFTA for the BBC, Victoria Wood As Seen on TV (she later appeared in the musical version, and received an Olivier Award nomination for her efforts).

Before making her debut in Educating Rita on the stage of the London Palladium, Walters had experience performing in provincial theatre, stand-up comedy, and cabaret. Her first serious acting role on television was in the classic Boys from the Blackstuff in 1982, and she broke into films with her performance opposite Michael Caine in Educating Rita (1983), a role she had created on the West End stage. This performance earned her an Academy Award nomination, the BAFTA Best Actress award, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
