Kane Hodder Biography and Career:
Hodder was born in Auburn, California, in 1955, and grew up there. An interview early in his career ended tragically when he offered to demonstrate a fire trick to the interviewer and her cameraman. The incident left him with 2nd and 3rd-degree burns across much of his upper body, and he had to be hospitalized for several weeks. Even though he had suffered from severe burns, he was considered for the role of Freddy Krueger in the classic horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street (see the section “To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story” further down this page), a role that was ultimately given to Robert Englund, with whom Hodder would form a lifelong friendship.
Jason Voorhees was played by him in four consecutive films, beginning with Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood and continuing with Jason X, marking the first time a single actor had played the character more than once in film history. While working on the stunts for Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III in 1990, he was cast in the part of horror legend Leatherface, and he also appeared as Freddy Krueger’s clawed glove hand in the last climax of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday in 1993. As a police officer, he appeared in the film Jason Goes to Hell, in which he also appeared.
In order to promote Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, a promotional episode of The Arsenio Hall Show was aired in which he appeared in costume as Jason. Although Hodder expressed an interest in repeating his role as Jason Voorhees from the 2003 film Freddy vs. Jason, director Ronny Yu replaced him with 6’5″ Canadian stuntman Ken Kirzinger. A number of allegations, including Kirzinger’s residence in Canada and his height in comparison to Robert Englund, the actor who played Freddy Krueger, fueled debate among fans of the series, who were outraged by the decision.
It was New Line Cinema’s suggestion to do so, and the company took the decision to go ahead with it, according to Yu. While Hodder continues to harbor resentment about not being selected, he remains close to Kirzinger and Englund despite his disappointment at not being chosen. With author Michael Aloisi, Hodder collaborated on the book Unmasked: The True Story of the World’s Most Prolific Cinematic Killer, which was published in 2011 and co-written by the two of them. Adaptations of this novel were made into a Web series in 2014, which was released under the title The Killer and I.
He played the lead role in the slasher film Hatchet, in which he played the role of Victor Crowley, a terribly scarred young boy who returns from the dead to massacre anyone who intrudes into the swamp where he lives, a story that is similar to that of Jason Voorhees. In recognition of his performance in the film, he was awarded the Horror Jury Award for Best Actor at the Fantastic Fest held in Austin, Texas. Hatchet II, Hatchet III, and Victor Crowley were all films in which he played this character again.
Hodder was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as Grawesome Crutal in the iconic slasher film Muck and its sequel, Muck: Feast of Saint Patrick, for which he received a nomination. He appeared in the horror-comedy Love in the Time of Monsters, in which he also had a supporting part, with Michael McShane.
