Kenya Barris is an American writer, producer, director, and actor who has worked in both film and television. His most well-known work is as the creator of the ABC comedy series black-ish (2014–present), which he also developed and executive produces. The second of five children, Barris was born and raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood, California.

As a result of his father’s tour to the country, he was given the name Kenya. Barris’ parents divorced when he was five years old, and he was raised by his grandmother until he was eighteen. Barris has been married to Dr. Rania “Rainbow” Edwards Barris, an anesthesiologist, for nine years, and they have two children.
