Kimi Räikkönen Biography and Career:

After completing his second term with the Ferrari, Kimi-Matias Räikkönen (born October 17, 1979, in Espoo, Finland) is a Finnish Formula One driver who now competes for Alfa Romeo after previously driving for Ferrari. As well as his two-year stint with Lotus-Renault, Räikkönen has also had a two-year stint away from the sport, after a two-year absence. He has been racing for McLaren-Mercedes and Sauber-Petronas since 2001 before his first stint with the Ferrari team in 2007.

After a season-long struggle with McLaren-Mercedes drivers Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, Räikkönen won the 2007 World Drivers’ Championship with Ferrari. The Finn defeated both Alonso and Hamilton by a single point.

It was his hope at the time that his performance would earn him a test drive for the 2001 season, with a goal of racing in the Formula 3 championship the following year. Sauber, on the other hand, was so pleased with Räikkönen’s testing performance that they decided to contract him as a racing driver for the 2001 season. Because of Räikkönen’s lack of previous racing experience, he had a tough time convincing the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to award him a super license to compete with.

However, after another strong performance in a test in November 2000, the FIA decided to award Räikkönen his super license, and Sauber recruited Räikkönen for the 2001 season with another promising young driver, Nick Heidfeld, to compete in Formula One. The decision to grant Räikkönen a super license was met with much controversy, as many considered he had the necessary racing experience to compete in Formula One.

One of Räikkönen’s most noteworthy opponents was FIA President Max Mosley, who spoke out against the Finnish driver’s racing drive. Following that, Räikkönen would compete in the first four races under the surveillance of the FIA, which would then determine whether or not to remove his super license based on his performance.

Despite qualifying in thirteenth place, Räikkönen finished just three positions behind teammate Nick Heidfeld during the opening race in Australia. Räikkönen had a very calm race, although he was advanced many positions as a result of the retirements that occurred throughout the race.

After the BAR of Olivier Panis was penalized for overtaking teammate Nick Heidfeld while the yellow flags were being flown, Räikkönen was upgraded to sixth place despite finishing seventh overall. Consequently, Räikkönen collected points in his Formula One debut, and Sauber had a great showing, with Heidfeld taking fourth place in the standings.

In Malaysia, Räikkönen qualified in fourteenth place, three places behind Heidfeld, which was his qualifying position in Finland. Due to a driveshaft failure at the start of the race, Räikkönen was unable to make it off the starting grid and was forced to retire on the first lap of the race.
