Kip Thorne Biography and Career:

Kip Stephen Thorn is a famous American theoretical physicist who is most well-known for his contributions to the fields of astrophysics and gravitational physics. The Nobel Prize in Physics was bestowed to him in 2017 in recognition of “his decisive contributions to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), and to the observation of gravitational waves.” The award was split between him, American physicist Rainer Weiss, and American physicist Barry C. Barish.

Former Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) until 2009, Kip S. Thorne is widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable individuals in the world on Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Kip S. Thorne was born on June 1st, 1940 in the city of Logan in the state of Utah. Both of his parents had academic positions at Utah State University. His father, D. Wynne Thorne, was a soil scientist, and his mother, Alison C. Thorne, was an economist. He was named after his parents. He came from a family in which a strong emphasis was placed on education, and two of his four siblings went on to pursue careers in academia.

When he was eight years old, he began displaying an interest in science for the first time. He went to a presentation when he was younger about the solar system, and thereafter, he and his mother got to work on some calculations to create their very own solar system model.

Thorne received his degree in 1962 from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), which he attended after graduating from Logan High School. The year after that, he received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. The subject of his dissertation was “On Geometrodynamics of Cylindrical System,” and he worked on it under the direction and supervision of John Wheeler, who is also a relativist.

Thorne then went on to become a full professor of theoretical physics at Caltech after returning there in 1967 in the capacity of associate professor. After a little more than a decade, in 1981, he was promoted to the position of William R. Kenan Jr. Professor, and in 1991, he was promoted to the position of Feynman Professor of Theoretical Science. 2009 marked his retirement from his role as Professor Emeritus at this institution.

To pursue a career in writing and directing films for the big screen, he decided to quit his renowned post at Caltech. Christopher Nolan, who is most recognized for his work as the director of the Dark Knight movie franchise, was engaged in his very first film production.

During the years that he was actively involved in the academic community, Kip S. Thorne served as a wonderful mentor and guide for a large number of young, talented minds, many of whom are now recognized for their contributions as influential theorists. Under his tutelage at Caltech, at least fifty students have earned their doctorates in several disciplines.

Thorne is renowned for his unrivaled capacity to instill a sense of enthusiasm in others and make them comprehend the importance of discoveries made in the fields of astrophysics and gravity. However, he is most well-known for his notion that wormholes discovered in space have the potential to be utilized as time travel portals. Even though this concept is very contentious, it has managed to captivate a lot of people’s minds.

Thorne was a contributor to the establishment of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in 1984, which is now conducting experiments with gravitational waves. Because gravity is such a feeble force, gravitational waves can only be observed when large quantities of mass interact, such as when two black holes spiral toward each other. The theory of relativity developed by Albert Einstein anticipated the existence of gravitational waves.

In 2015, gravitational waves were discovered after a collision between two black holes that occurred 1.3 billion light years distant and created a new black hole. The event occurred in 2015. Thorne was awarded a portion of the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2017 in recognition of his contributions to the LIGO project and the detection of gravitational waves.

Thorne made important contributions to the field of research on black holes, and he was the one who came up with the Hoop Conjecture hypothesis. This theory eliminates the need for naked singularity hypotheses by proposing that a collapsing star eventually becomes a black hole.

Kip S. Thorne has also collaborated with physicists on his idea of wormholes and time travel to further develop it. These researchers include Sung-Won Kim, Mike Morris, and Ulvi Yurtsever, and they developed a variety of hypotheses on the impacts that occur when mass travels through wormholes and how it affects time.

Together with Charles W. Misner, Thorne authored the comprehensive physics textbook “Gravitation” (1973), which was centered on Einstein’s theory of gravity. There are a total of 10 sections and 44 chapters, and each one starts with a famous quote.

A popular scientific book titled “Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein’s Outrageous Legacy” was also written by him in the year 1994. Thorne wrote “The Science of Interstellar” in 2014, which discusses the science behind the film “Interstellar” directed by Christopher Nolan.

In 2017, he collaborated with another author on a textbook for advanced students of physics entitled “Modern Classical Physics: Optics, Fluids, Plasmas, Elasticity, and Relativity and Statistical Physics.”
