Lea Thompson Biography and Career:

Thompson, Lea Katherine, was born in the United States on May 31, 1961, and she has worked in various roles since then. She is well recognized for her portrayals as Lorraine Baines-McFly (1985-1990), Beverly Switzler (1986), and Amanda Jones (1987) in the Back to the Future film series. All the Right Moves (1983), Red Dawn (1984), Dennis the Menace (1993), and The Beverly Hillbillies (1993) are just a few of her other well-known films.

She became known for her role as Caroline in the City on the ’90s NBC comedy. She co-starred in the ABC Family–Freeform series Switched at Birth as Kathryn Kennish from 2011–2017. She began her ballet training at a young age. By the time she was 14, she was performing professionally with the San Francisco Ballet, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre, all thanks to the scholarships she had won.

Thompson joined the Studio Company of American Ballet Theatre at age twenty, then called ABT II. Former artistic director Mikhail Baryshnikov once told her, “You’re a lovely dancer, but you’re too stocky.” She called the moment she realized she didn’t want to be a ballet dancer an “epiphany.”

It was a great relief because I could have continued beating my head against the wall for another decade. At 20, Thompson decided to pursue acting and relocated to New York. Her future co-stars in Back to the Future II and III, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elisabeth Shue, were regulars in her 1980s Burger King commercials.

In the 1982 interactive live-action video game MysteryDisc: Murder, Anyone?, Thompson portrayed the character of Cecily “Sissy” Loper. In 1983, she debuted in the film industry with Jaws 3-D. According to Thompson, “It was the very first movie I ever got, but I lied and said I had done a couple of other movies, so when I showed up, I knew absolutely nothing.”

I also claimed to be able to water ski. Nor did I. I had to master some advanced water-skiing maneuvers to participate in the Sea World water-skiing performance, and I only had around five days to do it. I can’t swim for toffee! Later, in 1983, she released All the Right Moves; in 1984, she released Red Dawn; and in 1984, she released The Wild Life.

Thompson’s most well-known part is that of Lorraine Baines McFly in the 1985-released first installment of the Back to the Future trilogy. Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) goes across time and encounters his mother, played by Thompson when she is a teenager in the 1950s. Awkward situations arise when Lorraine develops romantic feelings for Marty instead of his prospective father, George (Crispin Glover).

Thompson appeared in SpaceCamp and Howard the Duck that year (1986). In the latter, she voiced the lead singer of a fictional band named Cherry Bomb, Beverly Switzler, and contributed vocals to the film’s soundtrack. The songs were released as singles and on the album’s soundtrack.

In addition, she was nominated for a CableACE Award for her performance in the 1989 TV movie Nightbreaker. Thompson had prominent roles in many early 1990s films, such as the protagonist’s mother in Dennis the Menace (1993), the antagonist in The Beverly Hillbillies (1993), and a condescending dance teacher in The Little Rascals (1994).

She had roles in various TV movies during the ’90s, such as ‘The Substitute Wife’ (1994) and ‘The Right to Remain Silent’ (1996). While starring in the NBC comedy Caroline in the City from 1995 to 1999, Thompson received mixed to positive reviews from critics and viewers. In 1996, Thompson and her program won People’s Choice Awards for Favorite New TV Comedy Series and Favorite Female Performer in a New TV Series, respectively.

Thompson again had a leading role in the 1998 American TV miniseries A Will of Their Own, directed by Karen Arthur. The video chronicles the empowerment and self-determination movements of six generations of women in one American family. On its first airing on NBC on October 18, 1998, the film received mostly positive reviews from critics.
