Marlo Thomas Biography and Career:

Margaret Julia “Marlo” Thomas is an American actress, producer, novelist, and social activist. She was born on November 21, 1937, in the United States. She is most well-known for her role as the title character in the comedy That Girl, which aired from 1966 to 1971, and for her children’s television series Free to Be… You and Me. She is a member of the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. She has been honored with three Primetime Emmy Awards, one Daytime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Peabody Award for her work in television. Additionally, she was presented with a Peabody Award.

In addition to that, she has been honored with a Grammy Award for the children’s CD titled Marlo Thomas and Friends: Thanks and Giving All Year Long. She was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the year 2014. Thomas now holds the position of National Outreach Director at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, established in 1962 by Thomas’s father, Danny Thomas.

In 2004, she initiated the Thanks & Giving campaign to raise money for the medical facility. Thomas received his teaching degree at the University of Southern California after attending Marymount High School and graduating with a degree in education. “I wanted a piece of paper that said I was qualified to do something in the world,” Thomas said. She was a Kappa Alpha Theta sorority sister at one point.

Thomas was a guest star on a wide variety of television shows, including Bonanza, McHale’s Navy, Ben Casey, Arrest and Trial, The Joey Bishop Show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, My Favorite Martian, 77 Sunset Strip, and The Donna Reed Show, among others. Her major break came in 1965 when Mike Nichols chose her to act with Daniel Massey, Kurt Kasznar, and Mildred Natwick in the London production of Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park. This was the year that she received her first Tony Award nomination.

She was cast by Nichols once again on Broadway in 1986, this time in Andrew Bergman’s production of Social Security, which also starred Ron Silver and Olympia Dukakis. In 1965, Thomas had a starring role in the pilot episode of Two’s Company, which aired on ABC. Even though it was unsuccessful in terms of sales, it managed to attract the interest of a network programming executive. He met with Thomas, discussing his desire to cast her in her series.

Thomas developed her concept for a program about a young lady who uproots her life, goes to New York City, and fights against the odds to pursue a career in the entertainment industry with their support and encouragement. At first, there was some reluctance on the part of the network since there was a concern that viewers could find a series that focused on a single woman boring or unrealistic.

That Girl was the sitcom’s name that finally developed from this notion. It starred Kristin Thomas as Ann Marie, a gorgeous aspiring actress who dated a writer named Ted Bessell. Thomas portrayed Ann Marie in the comedy. The show chronicled Ann’s day-to-day hardships as she worked temporary jobs while pursuing a permanent position on Broadway.

That Girl was one of the first television series to center its narrative on an independent woman who was employed and did not live with her parents; as a result, it cleared the way for many other shows to follow in its footsteps. Thomas was just the fourth woman in history to create her television series, following in the footsteps of Gertrude Berg, Betty White, and Lucille Ball. The television show That Girl ran from 1966 through 1971, generating 136 episodes and achieving consistent success in the Nielsen ratings.

After five years, Thomas decided in 1971 to stop the series. Thomas said that she believed it was the incorrect message to deliver to her female audience since it would give the appearance that the only happy ending is marriage; she resisted both ABC and Clairol, the sponsor of the program, who wanted the series conclusion to be a wedding between the two main characters. Since then, That Girl has become a hit with audiences watching it in syndication.

After the success of “That Girl,” Thomas, keen to broaden her horizons, enrolled at the Actors Studio, there, she studied acting under Lee Strasberg until the latter’s passing in 1982, and then with his student Sandra Seacat. She honored both persons when she accepted the Emmy Award for Best Dramatic Actress in 1986 for her performance in the television drama Nobody’s Child.
