Marty Stuart, a flashy showman with a penchant for rhinestone-encrusted Nudie costumes, is one of country music’s most historically inclined new traditionalists. Stuart, despite his penchant for glitz, was one of the most varied country stars of the 1980s, with a repertoire that included honky tonk, rockabilly, country-rock, classic country, Western music, gospel, and bluegrass, among many other styles. Stuart’s appreciation for classic and modern examples of country music allowed him to juggle the many facets of his musical persona gracefully.

Stuart was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1958 and spent his childhood listening to nothing but country music. As a kid, he taught himself guitar and mandolin, and by the time he was 12, he was playing with a bluegrass band. Soon after, he met Roland White, a member of the band Lester Flatt, and White invited him to play a Labor Day gig with the band in 1972 in Delaware. Flatt offered Stuart a permanent spot in the bar and agreed to monitor the teen’s schooling.

Stuart remained with Flatt until he died in 1979; the famed bluegrass maestro had disbanded the band the year before due to health problems. After working as a studio musician alongside musicians including fiddler Vassar Clements and guitarist Doc Watson, Stuart was chosen to join Johnny Cash’s backup band in 1980. Before releasing Busy Bee Cafe, an informal jam session for Sugar Hill with guest parts by Cash, Watson, and Earl Scruggs, Stuart released his first LP, With a Little Help from My Friends.

He wed Cash’s daughter Cindy the following year. In 1985, he broke away from Cash’s band to pursue a solo career. In 1986, he released an album under his real name after signing with Columbia. Not even the success of “Arlene,” a Top 20 country smash, could convince Columbia to release his finished follow-up, Let There Be Country. Also, in 1988, Stuart’s marriage ended, and he returned to his native Mississippi to collect his thoughts. Stuart’s self-assurance was restored when Jerry Sullivan asked him to play mandolin again with the Sullivans.

Stuart signed with MCA in 1989, and the following year saw the publication of his debut album with the label, titled Hillbilly Rock. The title tune became a Top Ten hit, and the album as a whole was well-received by critics who saw parallels between his sound and of Dwight Yoakam. Three singles from the 1991 album Tempted reached the Top Ten: the title track, “Little Things,” and “Burn Me Down.”
