Michael Gove Biography and Career:

In 1967, he was born Graeme Andrew Logan and became a politician, journalist, and author. He has served as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations since 2021, and before as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. Since 2005, he has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Surrey Heath. Gove, a member of the Conservative Party, has held a number of cabinet roles under three different prime ministers: David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson, among others. Mr. Cameron has stood for Conservative Party Leader two times, in 2016 and 2019, and has finished in third place on each of those instances.

He was nurtured in the Kittybrewster neighborhood of Aberdeen after being adopted when he was four months old. Gove was born in Aberdeen and raised in the city’s care system until he was adopted at four months old. He went to Robert Gordon’s College, an independent institution, and then to Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, where he studied English. After that, he started a journalism career at The Press and Journal, where he remained for a long time as a leading writer until joining The Times. He was first elected to the Surrey Heath constituency in the 2005 general election, and he was named to David Cameron’s Shadow Cabinet in 2007 as Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools, and Families.

After being appointed Secretary of State for Education by the Cameron–Clegg coalition, Gove oversaw the termination of the previous Labour government’s Building Schools for the Future program, the reform of A-Level and GCSE qualifications in favor of final examinations, as well as the response to the Trojan Horse affair. At their respective conventions in 2013, the National Association of Head Teachers, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, the National Union of Teachers, and the National Association of Secondary School Teachers all approved resolutions of no confidence in his policies.

He was promoted to the position of the chief whip at the 2014 cabinet reshuffle. Governor Michael Gove was appointed Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor after the 2015 general election and creation of the majority Cameron administration. Gove, along with fellow Conservative MP Boris Johnson, was widely regarded as one of the most prominent players in the 2016 referendum on EU membership because of his role as co-convenor of the Vote Leave campaign.

He served as Johnson’s campaign manager in the 2016 Conservative Party leadership race, however, he withdrew his support on the morning Johnson was scheduled to reveal his candidacy and declared his own candidacy, placing him third behind Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom in the vote.

As a result of May’s nomination as Prime Minister, Gove was dismissed from the cabinet. However, after the 2017 general election, he was reappointed to the second May administration as Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs. He launched a second Conservative leadership campaign in 2019 but finished third behind Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt in the final results.

The inauguration of Johnson as Prime Minister coincided with the appointment of Governor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Gove was given the responsibility of preparing for a no-deal Brexit, among other things. During the 2020 cabinet reshuffle, he was given the additional responsibility of Minister for the Cabinet Office. Following the cabinet reshuffle in 2021, he was promoted to the positions of secretary of state for leveling up, housing, and communities, as well as minister for intergovernmental cooperation and international development.

Graeme Andrew Logan was born on August 26, 1967, in Glasgow, Scotland. His biological mother, whom he first assumed to be an unmarried Edinburgh student, turned out to be a 23-year-old culinary demonstration, which he had no idea about. Gove had always thought of himself as having been born in Edinburgh until it was discovered in a biography published in 2019 that he was really born at a maternity facility on Fonthill Road, Aberdeen.

Logan was taken into care as soon as he could be found. At the age of four months, he was adopted by Ernest and Christine Gove, a Labour-supporting couple from Aberdeen, who raised him as their own. Logan’s given name was changed to Michael Andrew Gove once he became a member of the Gove family. In addition to running a fish processing company, his mother, Christine, worked as a lab assistant at the University of Aberdeen before joining the Aberdeen School for the Deaf as a teacher aide.

A little house in the Kittybrewster neighborhood of Aberdeen served as home for Gove, his parents, and his sister Angela until the family relocated to Rosehill Drive. In addition to two state schools (Sunnybank Primary School and Kittybrewster Primary School), he also took and passed the admission test for the independent Robert Gordon’s College, which was recommended to him by his primary school teacher.

In October 2012, he submitted a letter of apology to his old French instructor, apologizing for his misbehavior in class. Gove became a member of the Labour Party in 1983 and ran as a candidate for the party in the subsequent general election. In his spare time, he worked as a Sunday school teacher at Causewayend Church in the neighborhood. As he approached his sixth year of college, he was forced to seek a scholarship since his family was experiencing financial difficulties. He passed the scholarship test and was elected to serve as a prefect throughout his last two years of high school.
