Athletes from the Mississippi State Bulldogs football program represent the university of Mississippi State in the sport of American football. It is part of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference. The Bulldogs are a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Mississippi State has one SEC title, which came in 1941, and one division championship, which came in 1998. The Bulldogs have made a total of 25 appearances in postseason bowl games. The program has produced 38 All-Americans (including two unanimous choices), 171 All-SEC selections, and 124 players for the NFL (11 first-round draught picks). Davis Wade Stadium, the Bulldogs’ home stadium, is the second-oldest facility in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

Mississippi State (formerly known as the Mississippi A&M Aggies) was the first college football program to compete in the state of Mississippi. W. M. Matthews served as the team’s head coach. As the head football coach at Mississippi State, Ralph Sasse was a resounding success. After leading Mississippi State to a 20–10–2 record in three years and a berth in the 1937 Orange Bowl, which the Bulldogs lost, Sasse shocked the students and players by resigning from his head coaching position on the advice of a doctor after suffering a sudden nervous breakdown in the locker room.

Having departed Memphis, Allyn McKeen went on to become the head football coach at Mississippi State, wherein 10 seasons, he had a 65–19–3 record. The next year, he was honored as the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Mississippi State to its only undefeated season in school history and its second participation in the Orange Bowl, which they won. His Maroons team won the Southeastern Conference title the next year, in 1941, marking the first and only time in the program’s existence. Athletic Director Dudy Noble sacked McKeen after a 4–4–1 season in 1948, prompting him to step down from his position as head coach. During his coaching career, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991.

It was the first year that Mississippi State did not have a football team in 1943. Following McKeen’s retirement, Arthur Morton departed VMI to take over as head football coach at Michigan State. In the three games leading up to Morton’s dismissal, the Maroons went 0–8–1, 4–5, and 4–5, for a total of 8–18–1 and a cumulative record of 0–8–1. Heath comes to Mississippi State from Army where he had a 5–4 and 5–2–3 record in two seasons, for a combined 10–6. Heath was named to the Mississippi State football coaching staff in 2011. Warmath left his position as head coach of the Starkville Tigers after just two seasons in 1953 to accept the position as head coach at the University of Minnesota.

Darrell Royal came to Mississippi State from the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos, where he coached the Maroons to back-to-back 6–4 records in his two seasons as head football coach. When Royal resigned following the 1955 season, he accepted the post of head football coach at Washington.

Immediately upon Royal’s resignation, Wade Walker was elevated from line coach to head coach. Walker had a 22–32–2 record throughout his six-year stay at the helm. The institution was renamed Mississippi State University by the Mississippi Legislature in 1958. In 1959, the Mississippi State Maroons finished with a 2–7–1 record, which was far from impressive. Walker’s Maroons improved to 5–5 the next season, but students, supporters, and alumni sought his removal from the team. Walker was removed from his position as football coach by University President Dean W. Colvard, although he was retained as athletic director, a position he held until his retirement in 1966. Mississippi State’s mascot was changed from the Maroons to the Bulldogs in the 1960s. However, the nickname “Bulldogs” had been in use unofficially from at least 1905, and it had long been used interchangeably with the moniker “Maroons.”
