Maryland Terrapins football Biography and Career:

The University of Maryland, College Park’s football team, the Maryland Terrapins, competes in the American football league as a representative of the university. Currently, Maryland is a member of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as well as the Big Ten Conference. The Maryland Terrapins became a member of the Big Ten Conference on July 1, 2014, after 62 years as a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Terrapins are led by Mike Locksley, who serves as their head coach.

Founded in 1950, the Maryland Terrapins have played their home games at Maryland Stadium in College Park, Maryland with a few away games in Baltimore every now and then. They are one of two FBS football teams in the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area (the other being the Navy Midshipmen), as well as the closest Football Bowl Subdivision team to Washington, DC (the Washington Huskies). In addition, the Terrapins nickname — often abbreviated as “Terps” — was adopted in 1933 after the diamondback terrapin, a turtle species that is native to Maryland. The team’s official colors of red, white, black, and gold have been in use since the 1920s and are taken from the state flag of Maryland. Rivalries with Virginia and West Virginia have a long and illustrious history.

The program’s accomplishments include one national title, nine ACC championships, two Southern Conference championships, 12 consensus All-Americans, many Hall of Fame inductees, and 28 participation in bowl games during the course of its existence. In the Atlantic Coast Conference, Maryland has won nine titles, which puts them in third place behind Clemson and Florida State, who have each won 15. Many former Terrapins players and coaches have gone on to have successful careers in professional football, including 17 players who were drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Maryland Agricultural Collegiate, previously known as the Maryland Agricultural College, fielded the nation’s first officially sanctioned college football team in 1892. They were held scoreless in all three of their games that season, but the next year, they were undefeated with a 6–0 record. Because traveling vast distances was so prohibitively expensive during the first two decades of the program’s existence, the team played mostly against local institutions and high schools during its early years.

As head coach, Harry C. “Curley” Byrd was appointed in 1911 and served in that capacity for more than two decades until he was appointed as the university’s president. Maryland became a member of the Southern Conference in 1921, where it stayed for the next thirty years. While at the school between 1935 and 1946, several coaches gained notoriety elsewhere, including Frank Dobson, a former assistant coach under John Heisman; Clark Shaughnessy, the architect of Stanford’s undefeated 1940 turnaround; and Paul “Bear” Bryant, who went on to become the long-serving Alabama head coach after the school’s demise. President Byrd restored a player who had been suspended by Bryant, prompting him to quit after just one season.

Coach Jim Tatum was hired by the University of Oklahoma in 1947 after a short time there during which he guided the Sooners to a conference title in his lone season there. Tatum arrived at Maryland as the school’s sixth head coach in eight years, but he remained for nine seasons and went on to become the school’s most successful head coach in recent history. His accomplishments include two national titles (one of which was retroactive), three conference championships, three perfect seasons, six final rankings in the top-20, and five bowl game appearances during his time at Maryland. All in all, seven of his players were chosen to be the first team of the NCAA All-Americans, with five of them being unanimous selections. Maryland completed every season with a winning record during Tatum’s leadership.
