Texas Tech Red Raiders football Biography and Career:

This football program represents the Texas Tech Red Raiders, which are a collegiate football team that represents the University of Texas Tech (variously “Texas Tech” or “TTU”). The squad participates as a member of the Big 12 Conference, which is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Level I Football Bowl Subdivision (previously Division I-A) football division (NCAA). The program has been in existence since 1925 and has an overall winning record that includes 11 conference championships and one division championship. Matt Wells, the team’s previous head football coach, was sacked in the midst of the 2021 season and was replaced by Joey McGuire on November 8, 2021, making him the team’s 17th head football coach. Cody Campbell Field, located in Lubbock, Texas, serves as the team’s home stadium.

It was during the 1925 season that the University of Texas at Austin (then known as Texas Technological College) fielded its first college football team. From 1925 through 1936, the team was known as the “Matadors,” a moniker provided by the wife of E. Y. Freeland, the school’s first football coach, to represent the presence of Spanish Renaissance buildings on campus at the time.

The Border Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, usually known as the Border Conference, was founded in 1932 and included Texas Tech University. It was in 1937 when the school’s short-lived Matadors title was formally changed with the “Red Raiders,” a nickname given to them by a sportswriter who was taken with their vivid red outfits and which has stuck to them to this day. The next year, the squad won its first conference title and was invited to compete in the Sun Bowl for the first time.

The game, which took place on January 1, 1938, ended in a 7–6 defeat to the West Virginia Mountaineers for the Buckeyes. Texas Tech lost in four additional bowl games until winning the 1952 Sun Bowl, which was the program’s first playoff victory. Before withdrawing from the Border Conference in 1956, the Red Raiders had won eight league titles and one co-championship, which was the most ever won by a member of the conference at the time.

Texas Tech was accepted to the Southwest Conference (SWC) in 1956 but was barred from competing for any conference championships for the first four years of the four-year probationary period. It became a full member of the SWC in 1960 and started participating in official conference games the following year. In 1976 and 1994, the Red Raiders shared the conference title with another team. The squad remained a member of the SWC until the conference was disbanded, which occurred in 1996. The institution was asked to join the Big 12 Conference and eventually became a founder member of the South Division.

Beginning in 1996 and continuing until the end of 2010, Texas Tech was the only Big 12 member to have a winning record every year since the conference’s inception. When Texas Tech had five or more players with at least 60 catches in a single season in 2003, it was the first time it had ever happened. A three-way tie for first place in a conference division occurred in 2008 with the Red Raiders being one of three football teams participating.

Texas Tech has had 17 head coaches during the course of its history, as well as three temporary head coaches. Pete Cawthon, Dell Morgan, DeWitt Weaver, Steve Sloan, and Spike Dykes are the only coaches in school history to have won a conference title with the Red Raiders. Mike Leach is the first head football coach in the history of Texas Tech to win a division championship.

Dykes has the all-time record for most games played and years coached, while Leach holds the record for most victories overall. Higginbotham is the lowest coach the Red Raiders have ever had in terms of winning percentage, having won just one game while losing seven and tying two, for a winning percentage of.200. He has only one victory while losing seven and tied two, for a winning percentage of.200. Cawthon has the greatest victory percentage of all of the coaches, with a.693 mark.

Morgan, Weaver, Dykes, and Leach have all been named Coach of the Year by at least one organization in their respective sports. When Morgan was elected Coach of the Year for the Border Conference in 1949, he was a big deal. Weaver was selected Coach of the Year for the Border Conference on two occasions, in 1951 and 1953. The Southwest Conference Coach of the Year was awarded to Dykes in 1989 as well as the next year and the following year. In 1996, Dykes was also voted the inaugural Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, a distinction he has held since.

In 2008, Leach became just the second head coach in the history of Texas Tech to be awarded Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year. As a result of his efforts, Leach was selected the FieldTurf/Howie Long Coach of the Year in addition to receiving the Woody Hayes Trophy and the George Munger Award during the same season. All three honors are given to the greatest college coach each season. Kliff Kingsbury became the first coach in the history of the Big 12 Conference to begin his coaching tenure with seven victories in 2013.
