San Diego State Aztecs football Biography and Career:

The San Diego State Aztecs football team is the mascot of San Diego State University and represents the school in the American football league. As a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the West Division of the Mountain West Conference, the San Diego State Aztecs participate in football and basketball (MW). In 2022, they will begin playing in the newly constructed Snapdragon Stadium, which will be coached by Brady Hoke.

During their time in the small college category, they have won 21 conference titles and three national championships. San Diego State was planning to become a football-only member of the Big East Conference in July 2013, however, the Mountain West Conference’s board of directors agreed on January 17 to restore the Aztecs.

Originally, San Diego State University was comprised of two different institutions. The school colours of white and gold were used by San Diego Normal School. San Diego Junior College was distinguished by the use of the colours blue and gold as its official colours. In 1921, they came to the decision to consolidate the institutions and create San Diego State College. SDSC’s inaugural school colours were blue, white, and gold, and have remained thus till now. It was during the 1921 school year that they played their first football match. At the time, Charles E. Peterson was the most prominent sports figure at San Diego State University. He had been hired as a physical education teacher in 1916 when the position was created. Following his service in World War I, President Hardy persuaded him to return to the university and head the sports department there.

Initially, Peterson taught all of the men’s physical education courses and served as the head coach of all of the intercollegiate sports teams at the university. Immediately upon their establishment in 1921, sports media referred to them as “Staters” or “professors.” During the 1923–24 academic year, the school newspaper attempted to motivate the “Wampus Cats” by publishing articles about them. In the autumn of 1924, Athletic Director C.E. Peterson pushed the students to choose a moniker, and the school newspaper, The Paper Lantern, published a call for submissions for possible names. Following a few more issues, other names such as Panthers, Balboa, and Thoroughbreds were offered and presented to a committee consisting of Dean Al Peterson, C.E. Peterson, and a student.

In 1925, student leaders picked the term “Aztecs” over other options, such as “Balboa,” to distinguish themselves from their peers. They believed the phrase was more reflective of a southwest image, and there was no opposition to their choice. President Hardy officially approved the “Aztec” designation in February 1925, and the term was adopted by the teams within a week of President Hardy’s permission.

The colours purple and gold were chosen for the 1922–23 school year, but this created difficulty since the colours were the same as those of St. Augustine High School, which caused confusion. When one couldn’t tell the difference between an Aztec letterman’s sweater and a high school sweater, it didn’t go down well with the crowd. At the time, the colours purple and gold were the colours of Whittier College, which was a bitter conference competitor. Not to mention the fact that makers of Aztec items during that time period refused to guarantee the colour fastness of the purple colours utilised by San Diego State during that time period as well.

Associated Students president Terrence Geddis spearheaded the campaign for change, and after years of lobbying for a reconsideration of the school colours, students were eventually given the opportunity to vote in December 1927. Following that, two days of voting were held the following month, during which students were asked to choose between the colours Scarlet and Black and the former colours, Purple and Gold. The score was 346–201 in favour of Scarlet and Black on January 19, 1928, and it has stayed that way ever since.

Don Coryell was hired as the head coach at SDSC in 1961 when he was still a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. He guided the Aztecs to two undefeated seasons in the “small college” division in 1966 and 1968, and from the College Division (now split into Divisions II and III, with the current D-II championship considered to be the successor to the College Division championship) to the University Division (now NCAA Division I, which has since been divided into FBS and FCS) the following season.
