Phil Donahue Biography and Career:

In 1935, Phillip John Donahue was born to an upper-middle-class Irish Catholic family in Cleveland, Ohio. Father Phillip Donahue, a furniture salesman, and mother Catherine McClory were both shoe clerks at a department store in their early adulthood.  In 1953, Phil graduated from St. Edward High School in Cleveland after attending Our Lady of the Angels Elementary School. After that, he attended the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1957.

Aside from being an undergraduate student at the institution, he also worked at the university’s own television station. His career was shaped more by this event than by his degree. At KYW radio and television station in Cleveland, Phil Donahue began his career as a production assistant in 1957. When the normal announcer failed to show up one day and he was able to stand in for him, he was quickly promoted to announcing. Then he worked as an Albuquerque National Bank check sorter before returning to KYW to become a television announcer once his time with KYW was up. On the WABJ radio station in Adrian, Michigan, he served as the station’s programme and news director for ten months before moving on to another station.

The next year, following a brief spell as a CBS radio-television affiliate’s news stringer in Dayton, Ohio (WHIO-TV), he became WHIO-news TV’s announcer and remained in this role until 1963. Jimmy Hoffa and Billie Sol Estes, two of the most well-known figures in American history, were among those he began interviewing on a more regular basis. A few years later, he began anchoring the morning newscasts. Conversation Piece, a phone-in afternoon chat show hosted by him on WHIO radio, began airing in the same year, as well.

Soon after, he began hosting a business talk programme on television and co-anchoring the nightly newscast. His interviews with notables like John F. Kennedy, Johnny Carson, Malcolm X, Jerry Rubin, Pat Nixon, John Elton, and Mohammed Ali didn’t stop at any point during the documentary’s production. As a result, he gained a household name for his ability to intervene quickly and effectively. When WLWD, another Dayton TV station, offered him a morning interview show with a studio audience in 1967, he jumped at the opportunity to return to the airwaves as an E. F. MacDonald Company travel salesman.

The Phil Donahue Show premiered on DLDW on November 6, 1967. Madalyn Murray O’Hair, an atheist campaigner, was his first guest on the show, and he opted to focus on one topic and one guest per show. Soon after, he discovered a new way to get the audience’s queries, by asking them directly in the studio. As a result of its success, the show was syndicated to other Midwestern stations in January 1970, reaching 44 towns within two years. After moving to Chicago in 1974, Donahue renamed his show, Donahue. WGN aired the show until 1984. As he proceeded to take on current issues, he became the first national television host to tackle contentious topics, with an estimated national audience of eight million people.

In 1979, Donahue: My Own Story was published. Also in 1979, he began contributing to NBC’s The Today Show, which he would continue to do until 1988. His participation in the ‘US-Soviet Space Bridge’ in 1982 was historic. The USSR’s Vladimir Vladimirovich Pozner hosted an audience in the USSR, and he hosted an audience in the US during this show. It wasn’t until two years later that he relocated to New York City and began broadcasting his show there. He kept in touch with Pozner throughout the years, and the two became good friends and enjoyed a fruitful relationship. His show was the first American chat show to be filmed in the Soviet Union in 1987.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Pozner and John Donahue co-hosted Posner/Donahue, a weekly show about Soviet-American relations, in 1992. It aired on CNBC until 1995 when it was cancelled. By the mid-1990s, Geraldo Rivera, Oprah Winfrey, and Sally Jessy Raphael’s talk shows were stealing viewers away from his show. As a tribute to Phil Donahue, the more explicit nature of these episodes made his show seem tame. On September 13, 1996, the final episode of Donahue aired. After that, he decided to retire because of a lack of interest in the show. A new show named Donahue on MSNBC brought him back to television in July of 2002.

Because of his anti-war sentiments, it was quickly cancelled, with its final episode airing on February 25th, 2003. The documentary film Body of War, which Donahue co-wrote and co-directed with Ellen Spiro, premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Donahue was on the air for 29 years before it was cancelled in 1996. At this time, the network broadcast approximately 7,000 hour-long daily programmes to a wide audience across the country. It has remained one of the longest-running syndicated talk shows in American television history to this day.

He has won 10 Daytime Emmy Awards, nine of which were for Outstanding Talk Show Host (1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986 and 1988). Additionally, he was given an Emmy in 1996 for lifetime achievement. He won the Peabody Award in 1980 and the Maggie Award in 1987. At the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ annual awards dinner on November 20, 1993, he was inducted into its Hall of Fame. According to TV Guide’s list of the 50 greatest actors and actresses in television history, he was placed 42nd overall in 1996.
