Rebecca Adlington Biography and Career:

Rebecca Adlington OBE is a former professional swimmer from the United Kingdom. She is most known for her expertise in the freestyle events held at international competitions. Adlington was born on February 17, 1989. She won the 400-meter freestyle event and the 800-meter freestyle event at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where she also broke the world mark that had been held by Janet Evans for the previous 19 years in the 800-meter final.

Adlington was the first British swimmer to win two gold medals at the Olympics since 1908 and the first to win an Olympic swimming title since 1988. After earning her first gold medal at the World Championships over 800 meters in 2011, as well as silver in the 400 meters at the same meet, she went on to win bronze medals in the women’s 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle events at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Her first gold medal was earned over 800 meters.

She earned a second bronze medal after participating in the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay. She finished fourth place in her favorite event, the 800-meter freestyle swim. At the European Swimming Championships held in Budapest in 2010, Adlington triumphed in the 400-meter freestyle event. Still, she was once again unsuccessful in winning a medal in her preferred 800-meter freestyle event, placing eighth. She was a squad member that won bronze in the four 200-meter freestyle relay.

She was a member of the English record-breaking 4×200-meter freestyle relay team that also won bronze at the Commonwealth Games, which took place in New Delhi. She earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter freestyle event, a “bonus” medal. Adlington won her first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after dominating the women’s 800-meter freestyle event and finishing first. Adlington cruised to victory in the women’s 400-meter freestyle event, capturing her second gold medal of the Olympics and completing her Olympic double.
