Richard O’Brien Biography and Career:

Richard Timothy Smith, born on the 25th of March 1942 and went by the stage name Richard O’Brien professionally, is a British-New Zealander actor, writer, composer, musician, and television presenter. Richard Timothy Smith was born. In 1973, he penned the lyrics and music for the musical stage performance The Rocky Horror Performance, which has continued in production ever since. In addition to that, he collaborated with filmmaker Jim Sharman to write the script for the film adaptation.

In addition to that, Sharman was instrumental in turning O’Brien’s rough draft of a schlock-horror comic book fantasy adventure into a finished product. Sharman recommended switching the working title from They Came from Denton High to The Rocky Horror Show, and the show’s first performance took place at the Theatre Upstairs in June of 1973. Within a few weeks, it had become a box-office smash, and it was transferred from the Royal Court to the Classic Cinema, a theater on the King’s Road scheduled to be demolished.

After seeing the second night’s performance of The Rocky Horror Show at the Theatre Upstairs, Jonathan King hastened to record the original cast soundtrack in only a little over 48 hours over an off-stage weekend. He then hurriedly released it on his UK Records label. In addition, he invested 20% of his own money with producer Michael White, who provided the remaining 80% of the funding. O’Brien continued to collaborate with arranger Richard Hartley on the creation of musicals such as T. Zee (1976), Disaster (1978), The Stripper (1982) (which was adapted from a Carter Brown book and staged in Australia), Top People (1984), and others.

In addition, O’Brien and Hartley contributed three songs to the soundtrack of the 1983 film The Return of Captain Invincible, which starred Alan Arkin. O’Brien has portrayed a variety of parts during his career, one of which being the Child Catcher in the West End theater production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which he also conceptualized.[15] In addition to this, he does comedic and cabaret-style performances at venues all around the globe, where he sings, among other things, songs from the Rocky Horror Show. Disgracefully Yours is a musical comedy play he developed and starred in as the diabolical charmer Mephistopheles Smith in 1995. He performed in a limited number of shows in this guise.

He was subsequently permitted to be transformed into a musical, first by Eubank Productions for the Kansas City Fringe Fest in 2006, and more recently by Janus Theatre Company for the Edinburgh Fringe 2007, named Mephistopheles Smith. Both productions were performed at the Kansas City Fringe Fest. In the latter part of 2005, he made an appearance (in the role of the ghost of the mirror) in the pantomime adaptation of Snow White that was performed at the Milton Keynes Theatre. During the summer of 2006, he served at Buckingham Palace as the Child Catcher as part of the festivities commemorating the Queen’s 80th birthday.
