Shannon Hale Biography and Career:

Her mother claims that Shannon has always had a vivid imagination and has been babbling incoherently since she was a little child. As soon as she was able to communicate, she began to make up tales and get her younger siblings to act them out in a series of skits. She did this until, happily, a teacher in elementary school exposed her to the magic of written fiction. She started writing novels when she was eleven years old and kept doing so even while she was also pursuing her education and working as an actress in television, theatre, and improv comedy. She subsequently obtained an MFA in Creative Writing and worked on her novels throughout the evenings and during lunch breaks from her day job.

Despite the many rejections she received, she was finally able to publish her debut novel in 2003. Over the course of her career, Shannon has written and published more than 30 novels across a variety of genres and formats for readers of early, middle grade, young adult, and adult books. The Goose Girl, which was her first book, was selected for both the ALA Teens’ Top Ten and the Josette Frank Award. The critically acclaimed Books of Bayern series is continued with the novels Enna Burning, River Secrets, and Forest Born. Following the success of Princess Academy, which was given the coveted Newbery Honor award, the author went on to write the best-selling novels Palace of Stone and The Forgotten Sisters.

In addition, Shannon is the author of the best-selling memoirs Real Friends and Best Friends, both of which were illustrated by LeUyen Pham. She and her husband Dean Hale collaborated on the writing of the graphic novels Rapunzel’s Revenge and Calamity Jack, both of which were drawn by Nathan Hale. Rapunzel’s Revenge was chosen by Al Roker’s Book Club for Kids and was a finalist for an Eisner award. Calamity Jack won the award. They co-created the popular Princess in Black series of early chapter books with LeUyen Pham, who was the artist for those volumes. Shannon has written a number of books about characters that were created by other people in addition to her own creations.

These include five books in the Ever After High series published by Mattel, one book in the Spirit Animals series published by Scholastic, two books about Marvel’s Squirrel Girl written with her husband Dean, and a graphic novel about young Wonder Woman titled Diana: Princess of the Amazons. They call the house they share in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States of America, home and share it with their four incredible children and their two cats, Misty Knight and Mike Hat. The Goose Girl and its companion book, Enna Burning, are both works of fiction for young adults written by Shannon Hale, who has received widespread recognition for her writing.

Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, the crown princess of Kildenree, is the protagonist of the version of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale known as “The Goose Girl.” The story of a princess who must assume a lowly identity until she can rightfully reclaim her title and meet the prince to whom she is promised in marriage is told in the novel Princess written by Shannon Hale in 2003. The princess is waylaid by a vengeful lady-in-waiting, and she is forced to do so. (The image on the cover was done by Alison Jay.) Even though Ani has the unique capacity to communicate with animals, particularly birds, she is unable to form meaningful relationships with other people.

Ani’s mother, the queen, takes this news poorly, and as a result, she makes plans for her daughter to wed a prince from Bayern, a country that is located nearby. Selia, Ani’s ambitious lady-in-waiting, betrays the princess Ani when she is traveling to her new residence. Selia takes on Ani’s identity and makes an unsuccessful effort to kill the princess. Ani manages to evade capture by fleeing into the surrounding forest, where she is taken in by a kind-hearted lady. Eventually, Ani finds her way to the royal palace in Bayern, where she is employed as a goose herder while Selia pretends to be the princess in Ani’s place.

When Ani discovers Selia’s plan to instigate a conflict between Kildenree and Bayern, she is forced to enlist the assistance of the people who live in the forest as well as the farmhands in order to retake the position that is rightfully hers. “Hale’s retelling is a beautifully rich one,” remarked Connie Tyrrell Burns in School Library Journal. “It is full of eloquent description and exquisite imagery, and it has a complicated narrative, a vast cast of characters, and a strong female heroine.” In her review of the book for Booklist, Anne O’Malley referred to The Goose Girl as “a terrific adventure narrative full of peril, suspense, surprise turns, and a satisfying finish.” [Citation needed] Shannon Hale, author of novels that have been best sellers on the New York Times bestseller list, began writing stories when she was ten years old and continued doing so until she earned an MFA in creative writing.

She spent the better part of the previous twenty years composing The Goose Girl, the first book in her multi-award winning Books of Bayern series, before it was finally published. Since then, she has written and published forty books aimed at young readers, some of which include the Newbery Honor–winning Princess Academy series and its two sequels, the multiple award–winning Book of a Thousand Days, and the graphic novel memoirs Real Friends, Best Friends, and Friends Forever (with LeUyen Pham). She is responsible for the delightful Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn picture book series, which she co-created with her longtime associate LeUyen Pham. Her works aimed for an adult audience include the book Austenland (now a major motion picture starring Keri Russell).
