Established in 2009, the University of South Alabama Jaguars football program competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as a member of the Jaguars. South Alabama has never won more than six games in a season since entering the FBS in 2012.

The inclusion of football in the university’s intercollegiate sports program was authorized by the university’s Board of Trustees on the 6th of December, 2007. The squad started to play in 2009, with a complete move to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) expected by 2013. The club’s first season was in 2009. In a press conference held on February 15, 2008, President Gordon Moulton and Athletic Director Joe Gottfried named Joey Jones, the head coach of Birmingham–Southern, as the university’s first head football coach in its history. The club would play its home games at Ladd–Peebles Stadium, which would serve as the team’s temporary home until the completion of Hancock Whitney Stadium in 2020.

The University of South Alabama Jaguars beats Hargrave Military Academy 30–13 on September 5, 2009, in front of a crowd of more than 26,000 people in the program’s first game. The team went undefeated in its first season, winning 7–0 and outscoring its opponents by a combined score of 321–41 to claim the championship.

Having played just seven games in 2009, the Jaguars increased their 2010 schedule to ten games. The 2010 calendar consisted of colleges from the NCAA Division I-FCS, the NCAA Division II, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and no Junior Colleges, as well as institutions from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. At 10-0, the club finished its second season unbeaten, outscoring its opponents by a total score of 413-130 to claim the championship.

During the 2011 season, South Alabama began its two-year move from unclassified to Division I FBS classification, marking the beginning of a two-year transition period. For the 2011 season, South competed as an independent Division I-FCS program. After terminating their contracts with UC Davis and Edward Waters College early and replacing them solely with a game against Mississippi Valley State, the Jaguars were only slated to play 10 games in 2011.

Colleges from NCAA Division I-FBS, NCAA Division I-FCS, and NCAA Division II competed against each other in the 2011 schedule. South Alabama’s games were broadcast live for the first time this season. It was broadcast on local station WJTC as well as on ESPN3 for the 2011 season opener versus West Alabama. ESP3 broadcast the Jaguars’ game against North Carolina State on September 17, which was broadcast live. The Jaguars ended with a 6–4 record during the season.

It was South Alabama’s last season in the transition period to full Division I-FBS classification, which occurred for the 2012 season. After completing a complete league schedule, the Jaguars resumed playing against Sun Belt Conference opponents, however, they were not eligible for either the conference championship or postseason bowl games.

The Jaguars did not fare well in non-conference play, finishing 1–4 with the lone win coming against FCS opponent Nicholls State in the season opener. The Jaguars struggled in Sun Belt Conference play as well, finishing with a record of 1-7, with their lone victory coming against Florida Atlantic. The team finished with a record of 2–11 and finished last in the Sun Belt Conference.

The South Alabama Jaguars earned full Division I FBS status for the 2013–14 season after being elevated from the Sun Belt Conference’s Division II FBS status. The Jaguars also became eligible to compete for the Sun Belt Championship and a postseason bowl game after winning the Sun Belt. The team finished the season with a 6-6 record and a 4-2 record at home, putting them at.500. In addition, the Jaguars went 4-3 in Sun Belt Conference action.

A formal acceptance of an offer to participate in the first Raycom Media Camellia Bowl was made on December 3 by President Tony Waldrop on behalf of the institution and football team. This was the first-ever bowl game in the history of South Alabama football. As a result, in their fifth season of competition and second season of bowl eligibility, South Alabama broke the previous record set by Florida Atlantic and became the youngest FBS team to qualify for a bowl game. The Jaguars and Bowling Green squared off in the inaugural Camellia Bowl. South Alabama was defeated in their first bowl game by a score of 33–28.

The 2015 South Alabama Jaguars football team was coached by Joey Jones, who was in his seventh season as head coach. The Jaguars played their home games at Ladd–Peebles Stadium in Mobile. The Jaguars were members of the Sun Belt Conference at the time of their emergence. They finished the season with a record of 5–7 overall and 3–5 in Sun Belt play, tying them for fifth place with three other teams.

The victory was also the first for the United States against a Power 5 opponent. South Alabama defeated No. 19 San Diego State 42-24 to earn their first-ever victory over a ranked opponent in the nation’s top division. The Jaguars would go on to finish the season with a 6–7 record, losing to Air Force in the Arizona Bowl, to finish sixth in the AAC.
