Memphis Tigers football Biography and Career:
The University of Memphis Tigers football team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision as a member of the University of Memphis. The Tigers compete as an all-sports member of the American Athletic Conference. The Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium serves as the team’s home field. Mr. Ryan Silverfield is the team’s head coach.
During their illustrious history, the Memphis Tigers have won more than 450 games and competed in thirteen bowl games since its founding in 1912. Aside from that, the program has won eight conference titles, the most recent of which was won in 2019.
During the 1912 season, the football team of West Tennessee State Normal School competed against other schools. Clyde Wilson served as the team’s coach. Lester Barnard was the head coach of the Tigers in 1922. With a 5–2–2 record, his club finished second in the league. The Tigers were led to success by Zach Curlin, who took over for Barnard in 1924 and remained in that position until 1936.
Over the course of Curlin’s administration, the institution was a member of two sports conferences: the Mississippi Valley Conference (1928–1934) and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1935–1941). When Curlin stepped down as football coach following the 1936 season, the school’s search committee recommended Allyn McKeen, who was immediately hired as the school’s president by Cecil C. Humphreys, who had previously served as president of Tennessee Junior College in Martin, which is now known as the University of Tennessee at Martin (UT Martin).
Despite finishing with a 3–6 record, McKeen’s 1937 team laid the groundwork for the Tigers’ first unbeaten and untied season in school history. The Tigers had a 13–6 record under Allyn McKeen’s guidance throughout the 1937 and 1938 seasons. A perfect 10–0 record was achieved by his 1938 squad. Coach McKeen left the Tigers after only two seasons to take over as head football coach at Mississippi State, where he remained for the next decade until being elected into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1992.
Memphis State College was established in 1941 when West Tennessee State Teacher’s College was renamed. As a result, the Tigers became independent in the next year and remained such until joining the Missouri Valley Conference in 1968. Memphis State achieved just a 2–7 record in 1942 despite fielding a 56-player team, the most in the school’s history up to that time. This was owing to the fact that many of the players were called up for selective duty during World War II. Because of the circumstances surrounding World War II, the Tigers did not have a football team from 1943 until 1946.
The football program at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis was taken over by Cecil Humphreys, who hired Ralph Hatley, a former college teammate at the University of Tennessee who was then the head coach at the time. He made the decision to hire Billy Murphy as an assistant coach as one of his first acts as head coach. It took Hatley’s first Tigers squad in 1947 to go 6–2–1 despite having 38 freshmen on the field. For the whole season in 1949, Hatley’s Tigers outscored their opponents 385 to 87 and finished first in the country in total points scored. After finishing 9–2 that season, Memphis State broke the previous school attendance record by drawing 21,000 fans to see the Tigers face Ole Miss the following year. As line coach for Hatley, Ken Donahue was brought on board in 1951 by the organization.
Memphis State graduated 98 percent of its football players during Hatley’s time as the program’s coach. When Hatley’s Tigers won the 1956 Burley Bowl, it was the school’s first bowl trip in its history. The Tigers defeated East Tennessee 32–12 in what turned out to be the last game played in Johnson City, Tennessee. When Hatley stepped down as head coach following the 1957 season, his record was 60-43-5-0. Upon retirement, he held the record for most victories as head coach at the school, a record he held until his successor surpassed him in 1967.
Coach Billy Murphy took over as head coach of the Tigers in 1958 and remained in that position for a total of 14 years. A 9–0–1 record was achieved by the Tigers in 1963 under Murphy’s guidance. It was a 0–0 stalemate between the Tigers and No. 2 Ole Miss after a season-opening victory against the Golden Eagles. As a result, the Tigers went on to win their next eight games, including victories against Tulsa, North Texas, and West Texas State.
They also defeated Louisville, South Carolina, and Chattanooga, and finished with the only undefeated season in the school’s storied history. Following the killing of President John F. Kennedy, the game in Houston was postponed from November 23 to November 30. The Detroit Times awarded Murphy the National Coach of the Year, and the Memphis Civilian Award was given to him as a result of his efforts.
The first Memphis State player since John Dottley in 1949 to lead the NCAA in a major individual statistical category, running back Dave Casinelli became the first Southern player since Dottley to win the NCAA rushing championship. As the season came to a close, he was tied for third in running yards with Jimmy Sidle and Gale Sayers. However, he racked up 210 rushing yards in the last game to finish ahead of both of them.
His 1,016 running yards and 61 rushing carries topped the NCAA in the 1963 season. He was also the NCAA’s leading rusher in 1962. (219). He also matched for the national scoring championship with Cosmo Iacavazzi, who had 84 points to his credit after scoring 14 touchdowns for each of the teams. Casinelli set school records throughout his four years at Memphis, rushing for 2,796 yards from scrimmage and scoring 36 touchdowns in his career.
