Southern Miss Golden Eagles football Biography and Career:
Located in Hattiesburg, the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles football program represents the university in the state of Mississippi. They compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, where they play college football. Conference USA currently includes the Eagles, who play their home games at M. M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where they were founded in 1903. The university announced on October 26, 2021, that they will become members of the Sun Belt Conference by July 1, 2022, with effect from that date.
Southern Miss fielded its first football team in 1912, under the direction of Ronald Slay. That group finished with a 2–1 record. Dille coached the Golden Eagles from 1914 to 1916, compiling a 6–10–1 record in that time period. Because of World War I, the University of Southern Mississippi did not field a football team from 1917 to 1919. Coach Allison Hubert steered the Golden Eagles to a 26–24–5 record during her six seasons in charge of the football team.
His Golden Eagles teams were well-known for their speed and ferocity. After the 1936 season, Hubert accepted the position of a head football coach at Virginia Military Institute. Following Hubert came Reed Green, who coached the University of Southern Maine for a total of nine years, from 1937 to 1942 and 1946 to 1948, respectively. His final record was 59–20–4 in his final season. Since World War II ended in 1945, the Golden Eagles were unable to compete in football during that time period. During Thad Vann’s time as head coach of the Golden Eagles, the team rose to become one of the nation’s most elite football programs.
Vann posted a 139–59–2 record throughout his 20 seasons in Hattiesburg, with his lone losing season coming in his last season. His Golden Eagles teams defeated Alabama in 1953 and 1954, finishing with 9–2 and 6–4 records, respectively, under his leadership. In 1954, the Golden Eagles were able to get to the Sun Bowl.
Vann’s teams won the national title in 1958 and 1962, respectively. In 1968, Vann announced his retirement from coaching and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987 as a player. P. W. Underwood returned to his alma institution after spending the previous season as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee. Underwood produced a 31–32–2 record in his six seasons at the helm of the program and orchestrated one of the most memorable victories in school history in 1970, a 30–14 victory against fourth-ranked Mississippi.
With a 48–30–2 record in seven seasons as head football coach of the Golden Eagles, Bobby Collins leaves a lasting impression. Collins guided the Golden Eagles to two bowl berths, the Independence Bowl in 1980 and the Tangerine Bowl in 1981, after the completion of the regular season in both years. In the final Coaches’ Poll, his 1981 squad was placed No. 19 in the nation. Collins resigned from his post as head football coach at USM after the 1981 season to assume the same position at SMU.
Collins was followed by Jim Carmody, who had previously served as defensive coordinator for the Golden Eagles and had coached them for six seasons. A 37–29 record was established by Carmody’s Golden Eagles when they were under his direction. A 4–7 record in 1984 was the only season in which the Golden Eagles finished with a losing record throughout that span of six seasons. Until 2012, the Golden Eagles would only have one more season in which they would finish last.
A 38–29 victory against Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1982 marked the end of the Crimson Tide’s 56-game home winning run at Bryant–Denny Stadium, which occurred under Carmody’s tenure. In addition to being Alabama’s first loss in the venue since 1962, the game also proved to be the last defeat of coach Bear Bryant’s coaching tenure. During the 1987 season, Carmody recruited a young high school quarterback from Kiln, Mississippi, named Brett Favre to Southern Miss.
At the time, Southern Miss was already facing NCAA punishment for previous breaches when it acknowledged using unethical recruiting techniques to sign freshman linebacker Don Palmer in 1984. Carmody’s pay was frozen as a result of the ramifications of the incident. Palmer said that an assistant basketball coach at the University of Southern Mississippi gave him clothes, basketball game tickets, cash, and transportation to the university.
Curley Hallman arrived at Southern Miss after spending the previous two years as defensive backs coach at Texas A&M University. Hallman has the best-winning % of any coach in the history of Southern Miss football, with a.676 mark during his time there. During his time at the University of Southern Mississippi, Hallman mentored future NFL great quarterback Brett Favre. In three seasons at Southern Miss, Hallman has compiled a 23–11 record. After the 1990 season, Hallman accepted the post as head football coach at Louisiana State University.
